Climate change denial was a mistake

>An intense heat wave next week – much above normal temperatures will develop across west-central Europe, June 24-30th 2019

>Development of a very intense heat wave early next week, with 16 to almost 20 °C warmer temperatures than average at 850 mbar level lasting until the weekend.

I'm honest, I'm not prepared for this. Summer was my favorite season but now, I hate it so much.

>> No.10747233

Surely, living in Aus, you more than most should understand that a wave of heat can turn into a tsunami that seems to never end. The fucking roads are melting, for fucksake. This is a small episode of the extreme weather patterns we can expect to commonly see in the next few decades. You can't just hit the whole region with aircon when the heatwave lasts long enough to fuck the ecosystem in one way only to be followed by a coldsnap that fucks it in a different one. This is about more than personal levels of comfort.

>> No.10747257

It's the humidity what makes the difference. 38°C dry heat is bearable, may even feel pleasant, you only need to drink more. But summer is the wet season in Europe (except the mediterranean, where it is reversed) which makes it much worse.

Some people genuinely seem to think that ecosystems are worth protecting. Trillions of dollars would be needed to save them for only a short period. For what? Are they needed? The very existence of agriculture shows how bad ecosystems are at providing utility to us. Forests? How about fields.

We are terraforming this planet, there is no doubt about it. We cannot go back to how things were. There is no reset button. We can only accelerate.

Who cares about the climate once we separate ourselves from it? Domed arcologies, hydroponic farms, aquaculture and nuclear power. Strip-mine everything that can be mined, burn everything that can be burned. That is the solution to global warming. Defeat the climate, don't appease it.

That thing is very long but it looks like coastlines are mentioned, and yeah okay, that probably is the main thing that would affect Britain.

But even then, according to Wikipedia, we should only see sea level rises of about 30 - 34cm by 2050. That's hardly anything.

Pic related is a 1m rise, so three times the projected 2050 level. The UK is pretty much fine - some very low lying areas will submerge but there's very few of them. The Netherlands is fucked, but not us.

It's just a guess. We'll have resources that other countries will want, just like Saudi Arabia and Qatar do right now, right?

I'm just saying, it looks like the effects of global warming to the UK won't be all that bad - they'll be much worse for places like the southern US, South America, Africa, India, and South East Asia. Places that are already hot.

So surely those should be the countries most worried about global warming. For northern Europe and Canada, there are actually some benefits to rising temperatures.

>>10747861
That means a non-EU immigrant would first have to get EU citizenship - citizenship of an EU country. And Europe is becoming more anti-immigrant these days: see the Brexit Party in the UK, the National Rally in France, the AfD in Germany, the League in Italy, the Sweden Democrats in Sweden, the Finns Party in Finland, the Danish People's Party in Denmark, the Freedom Party of Austria in Austria, etc, Fidesz in Hungary, etc.

Nat Geo gives their source as the International Food Policy Research Institute. The other picture I linked to from the other thread comes from here - https://www.wri.org/blog/2013/12/global-food-challenge-explained-18-graphics - and they give their source for their graphic as a World Bank report from 2010. So it looks like two different studies.

So I would say that lends credibility to them. Hopefully they would have accounted for things like soil.

And surely Canada and Siberia have shit soil because nothing grows there because it's too cold? If they become warmer, more things will grow, including bacteria and microorganisms, which provide for more fertile soil.

Okay, found the source. They don't take into account different soils or factors such as increasingly variable weather or forest fires (which are becoming an increasingly significant issue in Canada for example).
As for soil quality, I don't know enough to give an informed comment. I know northern Canada has a lot of acidic muskeg which is completely unsuited for agriculture.

To be honest I know little about soil. What causes acidity then? You don't think warmer weather (presumably damper too because very cold climates are usually arid because all the moisture just freezes) will foster greater growth of microorganisms which will thus result in a more neutral soil pH?

>>10748006
The only real big disadvantage for the UK is coastal erosion / flooding, right? And yeah sure that's a problem, but it looks like it will happen pretty slowly. According to Wikipedia the sea should only rise by 30 - 34 cm by 2050.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_level_rise

I'm willing to have my opinion changed though. What else do you think will be a big deal for the UK and other northern European nations?

>>10748021
Yeah I did give an argument. Not a massive one but I provided some reasoning for my position. If you think it's a bad argument then please, explain why.

>>10748037
I don't really know what causes soil acidity so I googled it:
>Most plant material is slightly alkaline and removal by grazing or harvest leaves residual hydrogen ions in the soil. Over time, as this process is repeated, the soil becomes acidic. Major contributors are hay, especially lucerne hay and legume crops. Alkalinity removed in animal products is low, however, concentration of dung in stock camps adds to the total alkalinity exported in animal production.
>If soil pH is low, using tolerant species/varieties of crops and pasture can reduce the impact of soil acidity.
>Liming is the most economical method of ameliorating soil acidity.
http://soilquality.org.au/factsheets/soil-acidity

So it looks like greater plant growth and also animal farming can make soil more alkaline, and both are more possible in warmer weather. And also you can just add lime to the soil to counter the acidity. If the weather in Canada (as an example) becomes warmer, then it might well be economical to add some lime to an area of soil so that you can now farm on it.

Interesting, thanks for posting that
But how much time does that take? We may need to adapt and move within a relatively short time period, much too fast for plants to grow, die, grow die etc to make the soil less acidic. Certainly, we can't just instantly produce the absolutely huge yields we have in our current agricultural regions.
How much effort will it take to rebuild all the necessary infrastructure?
Warming isn't a binary process, it's a continuous one. Are we going to gradually move all of our agriculture north as the window of suitable temperature does?
Also, there's what >>10748172 said about pollinators which are dying off at disturbing rates.

We are destroying a balance in the ecosystem that is sustaining us. You cannot do farming without insects, which we are radically exterminating.

The ecosystem does not care about us surviving. It will live on. But we cannot live on without the ecosystem. Especially in the west, where everyone of us consumes like hundreds of times the amount of resources as people in developing countries.

Forget climate change. Let's talk about your idea of how science and society work.
So you are telling us, that you don't trust any kind of science at all, unless you personally verify every single detail of every single development in that particular field? That is an obviously very stupid position to have, but let's talk about something more important...

If you are not sure about climate change, why are you taking the hard no-climate-change position?

Shit like that happens in a chaotic system all the time or at least very often.

The best way to understand this is with an analogy, the Roulette casino game.
Weather = spins of the ball, results are all over the place. With weather it isn't quite as chaotic, but pretty wild anyways.
Climate = the probabilities of Roulette. These are very stable, in fact so stable that Las Vegas et al. base their business on it. For the averages to change, a lot more than a one week of weird weather has to happen.
As the pic shows, it has happened.
