Nat Geo gives their source as the International Food Policy Research Institute. The other picture I linked to from the other thread comes from here - https://www.wri.org/blog/2013/12/global-food-challenge-explained-18-graphics - and they give their source for their graphic as a World Bank report from 2010. As for soil quality, I don't know enough to give an informed comment. I know northern Canada has a lot of acidic muskeg which is completely unsuited for agriculture.

But how much time does that take? We may need to adapt and move within a relatively short time period, much too fast for plants to grow, die, grow die etc to make the soil less acidic. Certainly, we can't just instantly produce the absolutely huge yields we have in our current agricultural regions.
