How to career progression?
I've been at the same company for about 3 years now, first gig out of school.
Top performer, dept director giving additional responsibilities, praises performance, says he can get much more done and that I'm self sufficient and need little/no direction.
But the companies got an iron wallet. Instead of performance reviews on an annual basis, we get reviewed every ~18 months or so. My first (and only so far) review came after 20 months, and I received less than a 4% salary increase.
For those who've graduated and found work, how have you handled career progression? I don't want to be doing entry level work my whole life, and I'm not going to keep working my ass off for the same scraps that mediocre employees get tossed to them for doing the bare minimum all day.

tl:dr; how do I into career progression, preferably without jumping ship because I like where I work? pic related, the life being sucked out of me

Either you’re not really a top performer or your employer is shit.

Radiation Physics, also a customer facing technical support role so it would take a lot to train someone to understand our products, processes, etc to be able to take on any real responsibilities. And we sell medical devices so these aren’t uneducated customers you have to deal with.
Also they chose to hire me from out of state despite and very large and well respected public research uni in state from which to recruit.

This is why you go self employement, you are your own boss and you can talk on the same level with bosses from companies. Then get paid for saying basic things as a technical advisor.
Also nice shot, pentaxbro

I don't have a career, a job I love though. And I am trying to avoid a raise now, so I may not be an expert here but, but:

Employer can do reviews and an employee can request meetings with management meanwhile as well! I don't see why you should wait to be reviewed just review yourself and your employer!

Seet a meeting, prepare with stealer research and the info is so easy to obtain now a days. Look though gov websites and statistics, area stats to compare similar size companies and how they pay for the same position you have, be very informed!

1. Ask your managers how do they feel you have performed?
2. Ask them do they have any feedback or advice?
3. Praise your job and how you enjoy it.
4. State what you want and how much you want.
5. Give reasons why you need and deserve it, focus on their responses of you first two questions, mention your research stats only, only if you have to!
6. If they say yes oyou may need to negotiate, they may give you less and try to bring up a timeframe say I am willing to accept this amount and perhaps the rest can be arranged within this time frame! Worst case scenario they will give you some and say the rest we can talk latter!
7. If they say no, and say down the road say OK, don't push and say let us workout a timeframe and perhaps set another meeting ahead of time or approximate time! Laying them know you will be back!

If they say no and you have experience and you feel it is not a two way street and it's take more than give search for that other higher paying job! Once you aquire another better paying job give plenty of notice, a nice cake and thank you cards to management and coworkers.

If they ask why tell them you love your job, and working amongst talented and great people has been a pleasure but you must balance your long term financial goals and need an environment that can support your balanced career development and general life goals!

Good luck, remember you evaluate your employer not only they you!

A lists of everything I've done above and beyond my nominal duties, as well as the additions to my training log that I had to add for new responsibilities outside my job function.

Tread lightly, if you are a leader/employer and one of your employees come up to you demanding raise and putting a list of things they did over their normal duty, you would be pissed.
Compose it accordingly, don't be a douche. Just be all easy and chill, point them in the direction you want, let them ask you instead of you stating demands.

If you like where you work and aren't prepared to move or travel, then that's the price you pay. Either negotiate, go elsewhere or put up with it I guess.

I'm in the same boat, shit pay compared to industry standards but it's only 10 minutes drive from home, and after 7 years of driving 500+ miles a week to get to work and back (and having to fill the tank twice a week at bong fuel prices) i'll take that for now. I'm reasonably comfy and still saving two thirds of my wages each month, so I can't be arsed looking for something that will pay more but leave me with even less free time.

I should have clarified, my director requests said list for our annual performance bonus (up to 3% of base salary, so not much but better than nothing) so this is a list I already have, not something put together specifically for a raise.
My goal is to ask for more challenging technical responsibilities, those which our chief physicist would typically be responsible for, and ask for feedback. Hopefully this will plant the seed in their mind that I'm serious about advancement and not content to stagnate in a role

Maybe you should work more on your people skills before you start pestering your boss for progression. People in leadership know when someone is bad at managing others and are putting them on the bottom of their list.
Spend time with your colleagues, your neighbors, get new friends, meet girls etc...
When you get better with your people skills you will progress much quicker.

When starting career, switch companies every 3-5 years.
You advanced by moving into a new positions, not from staying in same position.

I've had a nice little spider spinning webs in an upper corner of my room the last year or so. A few days ago I spotted a new triply sized spider crawling into my potted plant. I didn't think much of it, possibly "the more the merrier". Today I saw this big new spider crawling up the wall close to my old friends territory. Then it crawled down. Up and down. It did this for maybe 30 minutes. I didn't quite understand what was going on because I didn't see my old friend in his web. Finally I figured out that my old friend was hiding behind a curtain. Pulling out the curtain revealed that this big spider chasing my old friend up and down. This spider walks on the wall and do not use any web lines, and my old friend is hanging in a line which he climbs up and down. Now I am paying close attention to this. I am just very curious to see what will happen so I do not interrupt. My pulling on the curtain seemed to make it easier for big spider to access little spiders line. A few minutes later I see big spider closing in on what must be a very tired little spiler. Then stops, and just sits on the wall 10 cm apart from him. Suddenly big spider jumps and engulfes little spider. As big spider clearly is devouring little spider, I start to feel a little shame that I didn't prevent this. I captured it and classified it. Turns out the spider is a jumping spider as on your picture. I released it outside. Now hoping for a new web spinning to come and spin cozy webs once again. Still feeling a bit bad for not rescuing my old friend.
