Have a hard choice to make: I got admitted into one of the best economics and finance schools in Europe, but I kinda want to do engineering instead. Any econ or eng grads in here? Do you like what you do? Help a brother out.

Economics and finance school:
>basically guaranteed to get a job offer before graduation
>very good pay right out the gate
>can later get a masters at Harvard business school or LSE if I want or get accepted into any undergrad program at basically any university I want just because of the school’s name and reputation.

I want to do engineering to actually be useful in a meaningful way, but again I have never seen an engineer work or actually talked to one so I have little understanding of what their day to day life is like. I just find it cool that they are the people that are responsible for designing all the shit that society needs and they can work all over the world.

Am I delusional for considering not taking advantage of this opportunity? Would it be retarded to do both?

Realistically speaking finance people are just as useful, if not more, on an individual scale than engineers (and thats not discrediting engineers at all-they are super useful). You generally have a lot more individual agency in the finance realm than the engineering one. Don't underestimate what you can get done.

That said, at the end of the day, it comes down to what you will enjoy doing more and what will enable you to lead the lifestyle you enjoy more.

Honestly I feel like you don't know much about engineering in general- you should really learn more about it before you make your decision.

You are not unique, what school is it and what subject?
Economics and marketing suck unless you have an uncle named Shlomo, but the other economic disciplines get you a job and decent pay.

fucking lol OP you're a dumbass, use this summer to consider at least two dozen careers in-depth before you end up regretting things.

It's good if you're Swedish and primarily intend to work in Sweden, mostly because of the networking and the alumni. Not so much for the quality of the school.

But you'd be a fool to take some random engineering course instead.

Do you want to be someone that makes new useful products that improve people's lives or a middle man that skims whatever he wants off the top?

Do you want to be producer or a parasite?

Can't someone who has this kind of background decide to be a producer rather than a parasite if he wanted to? Isn't that what Elon is doing with his economics degree or am I wrong?

You're vastly overestimating the utility (heh) of a econ/finance degree. If you think you're going to be walking out into some investment bank job making fuckloads of $ you're in for a rude awakening, only a handful of people get these jobs.
If you actually look at who banks/finance firms hire, they like to hire engineers/physics/math/stats majors because most of the shit you learn in an undergrad finance/econ degree is essentially useless trash that has no bearing on the real world. With engineering, you can work as both engineer and in pretty much any business because employers recognise the problem solving skills you've picked up along your studies.
I'd go with engineering desu

>> No.10674051

How much truth is there to banks and finance firms hiring stem graduates over economics majors? Seems like those people take finance related jobs out of necessity because there are not many places that a physics or math majors can work in their field

You don't seem to have passion for either so this all depends on what kind of person you are. Engineering is going to be a huge time sink don't do that shit if you aren't willing to give up hobbies etc for study time.

This person is confirmed for being an absolute retard. An engineer can easily learn all the relevant financial stuff that a business grad can. Business degrees are just fluff degrees for rich people so their kids can network you fucking moron hahahaha. Engineers are miles better than """finance majors""". Look at how many engineers working in finance, compared to the people with finance backgrounds working in engineering.

>> No.10676413

econ grad here;

econ's incredibly interesting, but not worth an entire major. some of the upper division classes stop feeling worth it especially once you get into game theory and bullshit of the sort.

I'd suggest picking up a minor in the field, and majoring in something more specific. I did the opposite, picking up a minor in medicine, and now work in the medical field. With engineering it could be dope, but i hope you like math

An engineer tasked to do accounting will accidentally invent AI to do it for them. Economists introduce drag, making for a more balanced singularity.

If you don't know how to make up your mind then you definitely aren't suited to engineering you dumb vapid whore. BTW you will neither excel in engineering or in finance because you're such a complete moronic waste of space that you would even have to post this question.

This is only true in certain cases such as invetsment baking. Trading and accounting can easily be outperformed by someone with good knowledge of stats and programming.

>>10672877
Low IQ post with no understanding of the effect of economics. If you can even think a little abstractly you will come to realize that economic policies can have a big impact on a whole populations productivity. A very fundamental example is the use of debt and it's leveraging nature.

>>10672923
Really depends on the type and what country. Seemingly OP might not be from the US as he recognizes LSE which is elite but not very well known in the states.

>>10673478
I have met several naive and frankly dumb people thinking they will become rich by studying economics. Having said that it is really not hard at all to land a nice consulting or invetsment banking job from a tier 1 bank or consulting agency SO LONG you went to a Tier 1 school such as Oxford, LSE, Bonocci or SSE. From what OPs post it seems like he got accepted to a reputable elite university. Still, math/stats/CS is the way to go if we look at the future of banking in 10-20 years.

>>10674051
Depends on the department and bank but it is definitely trending in the favor of STEM.

>>10676035
No understanding for economics what so ever.

>>10676404
STEM degrees are most often better than Finance degrees BUT people who do STEM are just slightly more intelligent than people who study finance. When looking at the top 10% of people studying in each field the difference becomes miniscule.

>>10676413
Subjective. I feel the exact opposite especially concerning game theory.

>>10676460
If he got accepted to a top school and performs good in class (easy as it is economics) he doesn't have to work as an accountant.
