The thing is, Einstein, one of the main examples people use of 'smart but lazy', spent his free time reading literature and philosophy and studying math and physics. He read Critique of Pure Reason when he was 13. These people usually spend all their time playing video games and watching capeshit and think that a knowledge of the sciences and a knowledge of the arts are mutually exclusive.

I suppose so. But why do they decide to assess one's "smartness" solely by looks, attitude and behaviour, rather on the practical result? I'd call someone smart if I see that one's faster than peers in processing the information, his practical results are high-quality (grades do show that, unless you're a cheater). Although I knew several people bluntly said to me, "well, your results and performance are bad, maybe you should reconsider ...". At least they are honest.
