A colleague of mine regularly gives his students an excellent piece of advice. When you confront a general problem and don't see how to solve it, take away half the hypothesis and try to solve it again. If the problem is posed for n dimensions, try to solve it for a Banach space. If the problem assumes some function is continuous does it get easier for any function that satisfies the intermediate value theorem? The idea is to generalize a specific problem to its simplest manifestation, like a metaphor. At the maximum try to find the bare least that makes it true.

One of the best books that I've read. I'd be willing to say it's superior to Atiyah-Macdonald. It certainly contains almost all the material in A/M except the few digressions into Dedekind rings and the Hilbert Polynomial, which could be read independently, and on the other hand contains material on homological algebra, like derived functors and projective/injective modules. At times it felt like it was just copying A/M but the proofs and explanations are more wholesome and complete, so you're basically getting the same treatment but better. Almost at no point was a step in a proof unclear to me. There are barely any results left as exercises. Probably one of my favourite aspects are the introduction before any chapter - I've gained a lot of intuition that I previously didn't have about certain constructions and results.

There exercises are more interspersed to solidify your understanding before moving on to the next chapter. There are fewer exercises, but to be fair many of A/M exercises were algebraic geometry (at the level of schemes) in disguise, and since the book devotes its second half to AG, it is reasonable.

I have only (fully) read the first half of the book devoted to commutative algebra, but I already know the second half, devoted to scheme theory, is not going to disappoint. If you are looking to learn commutative algebra, I recommend you look into this book over Atiyah/Macdonald's.

they used to pay people to memorize theorems till they saw the 'beauty of the math'. also most textbooks outside of america had no questions and came with extra exercise books. if you are serious about reading the elements id recommend reading the theorems intelligently. this means:

1) try proving the stuff yourself first
2) you paraphrase what is going on in the proof and the general game plan
3) try posing questions out of the different propositions
4) get another book full of questions to read out of

you should also be able to recreate the entire proof on your own. ive gone through the first 4 books but took a break to finish another book i was reading

These have been helping me through all my engineering courses. They were my Great Grandfathers who had a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering. I have over 100+ of these textbooks each on a different topic:
Mechanics. Mechanical Drawing I, II and III, Ballistics, Steam Engine design, Steam engine testing, Material testing, Gearing design and cutting, hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, pneumatics, etc.. Each topic is a whole book instead of one chapter of 5 pages in a physics book, etc. So you can really understand each topic in depth.

Each 100-150 pages. Circa 1920 - International textbook company.

>> No.10629630

I don't know exactly what you mean

From what I interpret, I'd say first you'd need to tell me what your aims are with mathematics. If you're into practical stuff, then you should probably want to be pretty good at it, maybe look into numerical LA or something, I'm not an expert on that.

If you're looking into pure math, then first you'd need to tell me analysis or algebra/geometry. If analysis, I can't really help you much, but know that they do a lot of infinite-dimensional vector spaces there.

If algebra/geometry, then I'd say try to finish ASAP - you can always look things up on the go. Ie just finish the standard course up to Jordan normal form, make sure you understand it well, and quickly pass to studying abstract algebra. The cool stuff of linear algebra only happens under modules (the generalisation of a vector space), and you learn so much more when you understand vector spaces as free modules over a field - homological algebra is basically what linear algebra is meant to be, and it is extremely useful in algebraic topology and geometry, and also in pure algebra like group or ring theory.

If you want to take the algebra path, don't use a book as a guide, use lecture notes instead from any good university and speed through them, while doing exercises from the book the course is based on. You don't want to dwell on basic algebra too much. Once you finish such a first course, I recommend jumping straight to Aluffi's Algebra chapter 0. I cannot recommend the book enough - it's a fast intro to every single algebraic topic, includes hard topics that are somewhat optional (group theory stuff), and gives you a head in group theory, ring theory, commutative algebra, field/galois theory, advanced linear algebra, and homological algebra like no other book.

If you want to go on to algebraic geometry, then >>10615891 is most of the commutative algebra you'll need (it's my review), but I don't recommend jumping straight into scheme theory

Check out any lecture notes that cover Euclidean and projective geometry at a second year maths level before you start any more complicated geometry.

Euclidean is really easy and fast, so shouldn't take you too long, but Projective geometry is extremely important everywhere, and requires mostly just linear algebra (the basics at least). So if you're bored when learning all the required algebra for AG or AT, you should check out a more detailed exposition like Eduardo Casas-Alvero's book.

Something like:
http://math.ucr.edu/~res/progeom/pg-all.pdf
Or is that too much? There does seem to be a good amount of stuff, just from a cursory search.

Actually, that looks perfect - has all the topics I had in mind without being too long. I was a bit wary of advising Alvero's because it's extremely long and drags on and on with things that are quite obvious at times. Last chapter (conics) are the best way to taste algebraic geometry before going full on.

this book sucks as a proper analysis text. I bought it thinking it was Pugh or Rudin tier, but it's not. It did make a great follow up to Stewart's Caclulus though, but ultimately you will learn more analysis from Spivak's Calculus than this.

This is the best book in analysis I've read, and probably the least autistic one. For example, he breaks the definitions of limit related concepts into the language of [math] \epsilon [/math] close, eventual [math] \epsilon [/math] close, [math] \epsilon [/math] steady, continually [math] \epsilon [/math] adherent etc. instead of stacking quantifiers and inequalities like the usual autism seen in other books. It's how a master should write a book, leave his personal thoughts on the subject, thus the book is full of insights, and you can see every concept is related in a hierarchy.

Unlike Rudin's book which is just a list of laundry items, I like Rudin as an exercise/review book but if you read it as the first book you wouldn't see the depth of the subject (unless you read other books lol). Korner and Pugh's book also have great insights, it's a good complement to Tao. Tbh it's kinda silly to learn from one textbook.

For general biology there isn't a better textbook, for the subjects I mentioned check the wiki but off the top of my head Alberts Microbiology of the Cell, Brock biology of microorganisms, Lewin's Genes (latest edition), Evolutionary Analysis (Herron, Freeman), Ecology (Krebs) and it would be useful to grab a book on organic chemistry and if you get through that Voet's Biochemistry though you could finish the cell bio and microbiology books without ever doing that and just looking shit up that confuses you.
