"We" didn't want to have thousands of planets in the solar system, so 'we' made up a definition in an attempt to only have the important ones considered planets. I guess you think this definition isn't good enough, but the alternative is to have thousands of planets and we'd just have to come up with a new term for the important ones and probably end up with a similar definition. What we call it doesn't make any difference to pluto anyway, nor to how it's treated.

pluto has failed to clear its orbit. that is why it has a 'moon' that is nearly as massive as itself. it is so small that the orbital center between it and charon lies outside of pluto. if pluto where in a much more highly eccentric orbit we would call it a comet. other real planets have cleared their orbits. There is nothing that spends any length of time in the region 1AU from the sun except objects directly influenced by earth. Transient objects do not count for the purposes of determining a clear orbital path.
