What is the operating system of the brain?
Language, culture, or something else? What would be the virus that attacks the mind?

so, what can I do to hack that? With sense of self at least people have tried before and achieved nirvana if i recall correctly, is that an upgrade to the system? Or a whole new version, that also formats the hard drive?

Are drugs the shortcut, or just a blind end? You are the science board, and while i red a bit about the topic, the working of the brain is extremely important, so I hope that those of you who know more than me will share their perspective.

person-dependent. for some it's language, others visual interpretation of all information, and others it would be sound. At the root of it all, of course, is a sense of self.

"Hacking" it will not necessarily be an upgrade - if by upgrade you mean become smarter, more intelligent, or otherwise improve yourself in conventional ways.

Hacking the sense of self essentially deconstructs who you are and removes any neurotic tendencies. E.g. if you're only studying something to feel validation/get praise for being smart, removing your sense of self will remove your "need" for this. In that sense, it is an upgrade.

Drugs are basically just programs.
Some of them good, some of them bad.
A virus in your sense can be considered as drugs which cause errant behaviors.
Although a virus in a true sense should be self replicating so could be considered things like thought disorders.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

We don't even know what the hardware is. We know what it looks like and we have some idea of what it must be doing, but we really don't even know how it works, mechanically speaking. I think that would be pretty important to know before we go speculating as to whether or not there even is an operating system.

I think a better question is what base our brains run on. Perhaps two since our neurons are rather ‘on’ or ‘off’

You don't. (maybe brain implants if that is a real thing) You have to work with what hardware you have. Just keep updating the drivers and use Ccleaner when it slows down (sleep or a vacation).

Congrats, you've been just infected by one (projections).

Culture or Logos in general, I guess. It may be called language but language in a very broad sense. But that's like an IDE of our thinking.

The operating system manages system resources and provides them to the higher applications so I thing the brain itself and its circuitry is our OS. It's like the hard-wired OS similar to one found in primitive devices.
