Why is there so much talk about IQ here? It does not make sense. You guys do realize that no matter how smart you are, you will never get anywhere without hard work, and dedicated people will always beat out lazy and intelligent ones?

It seems to me like a enormous waste of time.

This board is populated by mostly stupid STEM undergraduates who believe they are very smart. They need that number to validate their lives.

But it is silly! Just work hard and you can not only validate your life and work but also increase your intelligence through the accumulation of material.

Success in the academic field has less to do with hard work or IQ than it has to do with politics and prestige of your institution / supervisor / collaborators.
You could write the same paper and reach the same conclusions and get massively different outcomes career wise depending on where you are from, who you know, what connections you have made, and so on and so forth.
See the black hole girl for example.

This is why I left academics. I honestly couldn't compete since I wasn't a social butterfly. I genuinely tried my best but going to the 5th cocktail party with a shit eating grin licking the butts of everyone there was too much and I just quit.

I'm not just an average engineer and my quality of life is a lot better. Sure sitting in an office working on designs is lame and not my passion but it sure beats being a pseudo-marketer social media personality trying to garner political points.

People on /sci/ need to realize this. If you aren't willing to be a politician you shouldn't go into academics.

The most successful people are people with a politics/journalist background that half-assed their science bachelor/master and just used the politics of the institutions to climb the social ladders.

Academics has nothing to do with science anymore. FUCK ACADEMICS

First of all, holy fucking checked numbers
Second of all, based opinion.
What good is your intelligence if you don't dedicate your time to making something of it?
Do you determine your self-worth by looking at a number that you could never control from the start, or do you value yourself based off of what you do have control of, what you create and say?
What good is your intelligence if you never leave anything behind that makes someone say "wow, that person must have been smart"

Because it quantize inteligence, something people identity with here.
Of course only retards think having low iq means you will never accomplish anything and having high iq means you will be new Einstein. However you can't deny that iq does determine how easy it is for you to learn new things and how good are you at abstract thinking.
It might be waste of time, but not as much as watching Netflix or getting drunk at bar. Everyone needs to relax sometimes.

Absolutely right. In any case, I think that it is not only the successful completion of the Bachelor's and Master's programmes that counts, but also the social contacts and connections. And the more of these you have, the better you can fight your way through with a bad IQ or (quite casually put) even cheat through it. The woman who was part of the team developing the photo of the black hole (but didn't really contribute anything herself) is a very good and fitting example, anon.

Tfw grinded in high school and am now in an institution where I get 70% off tuition for being middle class, and study under excellent professors with well funded research, among peers who are smart and hard working. And landed a internship with one of the top pharma companies. Feels good when hard work does pay off.

I'd say that "politician" is a little too dramatic. You do have to play a game in making yourself known, but if you're not a NEET, it's just being social in the community as you would be in any other community. You still have to work hard. You still have to come up with novel ideas. I think it's a hard pill to swallow for most of you when you realize that you have to give people a reason and be willing to go out for drinks with people to convince them. Academics are not nor NEVER have been hermits.

Ohwait, this is /sci/. Of course you guys would be the ones complaining about having to be social even in an academic job.
