No, but Tao is considered someone in the field of mathematics to be someone who understands "all" of math. Any math question from any experience level from kindergarten to post-grad/professorship, he has the answer to all of them. Almost no one else in the world has that much understanding of math or any science field in this world right now. Even Hawkings doesn't understand all of physics.

The gap between Hawkings and Terrence is similar the gap between you and Hawkings. That's not to say Hawkings isn't a genius or that you're a retard, but rather Terrence is just in a league by himself.

"Director" can still be someone who is primarily a researcher, like look at the directors of the institute for advanced study or perimeter institute or the C. N. Yang institute. in terms of the president suggesting it, that doesn't necessarily mean it has to be affiliated with e.g. a national lab (though it could be), but it could also just be a government funded thing in affiliation with a university, either really part of the university or just loosely connected (like how IAS is sort of princeton but not really). however, if the president or michelle obama suggested it, that probably means it will be a new institute, because it wouldn't be possible or make sense for a politico to overrule a preexisting institute's chain of command for picking a new director

I just think this culture of singling out geniuses before they actually do anything worthy of the title harmful. And in the long run I think it hurts her ability to reach her full potential. She's constantly showered with praise for every little thing. In the public's eye she's "the next Einstein". I don't care how smart you are, subliminally you start to internalize that shit.

If you look at most great scientists, the realm paradigm changers, they always have a bit of a chip on their shoulder. They have something to prove to the world. Maxwell was born into poverty. Newton was a noname autist who was bullied as a child and was considered a weird outsider for most of his life. Einstein was rejected from academia and had to work in a patent office. Darwin was up against the religiosity of his era.

I hope she accomplishes great things but we will see. A citation from Hawking is not a crowning achievement, so I don't know why people are latching onto that so much.

You analysis of that sentence is wrong. It is possible to be above average but not exceptionally above average. Furthermore, to be above average physics phd probably mean that she is exceptionally above average compared to general population. Close to everybody that studies STEM are above average compared to general population.
