Why does everybody want to be a data scientist without a statistics degree?

Is my statistics degree worthless against these kiddies?

>> No.10571784

>data scientist
what a fucking meme

fuck off it pays

Depends where you're working. Without a strong research background in Statistics, they're glorified plug-and-chuggers who can get numbers out of a black box, but don't really understand how it works and are incapable of doing anything innovative. For your average company, this is really all they need, but for big N you're not really competing with them at all, they explicitly want a research graduate degree in math/phys/compsci.

Will I able to compete with these kiddies with an undergrad degree?

There shouldn't be any statistics undergrad degree just as how there shouldn't be any data science undergrad degree.
If there is, that school needs to be razed to the ground for scamming it's students like that.

Based Genghis-khan.

statistics is not math and anybody claiming statistics is math needs to be shot on the spot

Based. Data science is the new learning to code. Almost as much of a meme as machine learning

>> No.10571910

big data companies hire mostly physicists to data scientist jobs. statisticians have their own title called “statistician”

that doesn't make it not a meme

If you don't know how to program, yes. If you know how to program, no.

>> No.10572968

Dunno, around here (West Europe) it's pretty popular
But most of them are posers
Someone I know did a one year master's in some programming and a project and now can call himself data scientist
He holds a bachelor in public administration can you believe that
I probably did more subject related as a mechanical engineer in university but I just am a mechanical enginerr, also by profession

Pretty much. I studied economics and sociology and i took me just about a few weeks to get myself into R and get job interviews at high ranked institutes in my town. I just tell them i am into decision trees, feature enginieering and random forest. eez

Not yet, he just graduated. Initially he told us companies are standing in line for graduates such as him but it seems otherwise
