Nah I grew up going to church where you watch alot of public speaking every Sunday and all the kids are encouraged to do a little bible reading once in a while. That was all always easy for me because I'd dealt with stage fright etc as a very young child where there was no voices but encouragement and I couldn't really fail. Since failure was cute.
Also sermons teach you how to make an essay or lecture on genuinely anything like how something the vast majority of the audience would have watched on TV on friday night was an interesting parrallel to certain Psalms or something.

Well.. the moment I entered the big leagues uni in grad school, many of my classmates turned out to have prof or at least teacher parents of some sort.
There is such a thing as an academic environment for growing up. An environment where learning is valued, curiosity fostered, an environment where you actually get to know some professors personally etc.
It really changes your perspective. Of course, it does not make or break you as a scientist, but it can make you more comfortable when you need to apply for grad school, contact professors etc.
Not that your parents will necessarily be involved, but you will have that experience of actually knowing what academia is about and how it works (whereas many undergrads, even advanced, have no idea) and be less intimidated by it

According to google, a scientist is a person who "is studying or has expert knowledge of one or more of the natural or physical sciences". I believe that the word "scientist" has been misused and narrowed to only represent a type of profession, when it is so much more. I'd say that all it takes to be a "scientist" is the need to feed your sponge brain, and the application of the scientific method. I think that anyone, no matter their background, can do this provided that they have the will and determination to.
Stop worrying about the past, because it doesn't exist, and don't worry about the future either, because it also doesn't exist. All there is and ever will be is the present, and to let things that don't exist hold you back, is a waste of the present.

This is why we should be suspect of /pol/acks claiming to be just interested in facts. You're absolutely wrong, when a high-national-IQ-average individual is at that range, it's usually _because of another cause_, which has many other deleterious effects.

E.g. aboriginals are usually perfectly functional individuals even though they have the lowest average IQ. But asians who have some syndrome that brings them down, are usually nonfunctional.
