We discuss research, offer advice (the best advice we give is "SEE YOUR FUCKING FAMILY PHYSICIAN), shitpost and make fun of dumb premeds.

Based labfags,Techs,PA's, NP's and RN's (students too) are welcome!

Remember, if you want to discuss vaccines, please make your own thread because it usually takes a lot of replies and the discussion usually degenerates.

Do you agree?

"Nurses taking on extra tasks want respect and collaboration from doctors; as well as proper resources; good referral systems; experienced leaders; clear roles; and adequate incentives, training and supervision. However, these needs are not always met."

As a future family physician, I'm required by law (Romania) to have a nurse, I don't know about other countries, also nurses are not allowed to practice on their own here. From the article, "Nurses were comfortable with, and believed they were competent to deliver a wide range of tasks, but particularly emphasised tasks that were more health promotive/preventive in nature." but they still want to make more tasks and be more respected. Damn, if they want so much respect, just become a doctor instead, it's really not that hard tbqh.

Well, that's pretty obvious. I see that at my mom's practice. She treats her nurse like an equal and they work very well together. (The nurse has been in my mom's private practice for approx. 11 years) But I was asking about American NP's that practice on their own.

>>10562928
There certainly are. Let me give you some examples. OB/GYN open their private practice but don't operate, just do check ups on women. ENT's do the same but without women only part, ophthalmology too and also urologists. I'm putting urology in because my urology prof doesn't work at the hospital anymore and he opened his private practice where he doesn't operate, just does check-ups and tests for patients. (But he's still teaching so idk how that goes tbqh)

>>10562939
You don't need to have good grades to get into any speciality to be good at it because you learn tons of things in residency but the chart shows that it would be ideal. Rads is complicated and is one of the specs that relies entirely on anatomy, a plus for a radiologist that respects himself is that he correlates the info from the patient's chart with the radiography or CT scan or whatever imagistic procedure he/she has done and that makes a 10/10 radiologist but nowadays, most docs don't give a shit about a radiologist's opinion so...yeah.

>> No.10562967

So what about specs like vascular, cardiothoracic, neuro or gen surg, are they fucked since their clinical equivalents (gen surg doesn’t even have one anyway) require specific additional knowledge of certain procedures?

>> No.10562988

>>10562967
Ob/Gyn, ORL, Ophtalmo are both medical and surgical specialities. CT, vascular, ortho etc. are almost exclusively surgical, so yeah they're pretty fucked if they can't operate.

>> No.10562993

>>10562967
Yes, they're kind of fucked. But keep in mind that you're a cardiologist and open a private practice, it doesn't mean that you have to do procedures, you can do consults, an EKG, some more basic stuff while surgeons can't. It would be absurd for a ct surgeon to open his/hers own private practice and not operate because cardiologists know the clinical part much better and more in depth.

Sorry if I make this a blog post.
My parents won't accept any other university for me outside of medical school.
They even bought the text books already and intend to sign me up for a prep course.
The thing is they believe every other major is basically a joke and won't get me a job in the future.
I'm frustrated, because even the entrance exam is hard as fuck (1 out of 6 gets through it) and even if you pass it it only gets harder, not to mention it takes 6 years to major (it's the longest) and it's still not enough because specialization is required which takes 5 more years !
They started using the guilt card with me telling me about this poor guy working hard in med school even thought he doesn't have my means, how they work their ass off to pay for my education, how hard it is to get a job nowadays and all that shit...
They keep saying I only need to commit and that I'm smart enough if I try, but I feel like a numbskull, and I always did poorly in the subjects (physics, math, chemistry, logic...) .
Christ my hs was humanities oriented, what do I know ...

Any advice ?

All of them pure Romanians that went out to make more money because the salaries my country provides are shit. Or were you referring to French or other nationality students that study here and go back to their home country? If so, you're pretty much right, the training for the img's here is not that intensive compared to natives (They don't take Cardiothoracic classes or occupational medicine classes so they miss on a few specs we do rotations on) and we don't have any foreign teacher so all of them are Romanian that are not exactly native speakers in French / German. It's almost 8, we're open from 6pm till 8 am just in case of minor emergencies. She says it's an emergency. Okay, what is it?

Patient said this "Before coming here I felt a slight electrocution that started on the top of my head and went down to the anus and before opening the door to your office I felt a short , maybe one second, sensation like an arrow that went trough my abdomen". What the fuck. Mom does a check up on her, lungs are fine, heart sounds fine, ECG clear, echography is normal. Patient "But I'm sure I felt these symptoms, something is not right, I know it's not!" The degrees are automatically valid inside EU. Here(Finland) people who go to Romania are not held in very high regard. Med school is free, and the government pays you gibs to study, so the only reason not to study here is that you were too stupid/lazy to get in or you wanted to go to a better school in Western Europe or the States. Better rejects go to the Baltic countries and the muck ends in Romania etc. So the quality of the people who come back from Romania is very low. And we recently had a case of nurses that just flat out bought diplomas from a Romanian school.

I'm sure that the schools themselves are perfectly adequate, but the Finns that go there wouldn't be good doctors even if they went to any school.

It's true that most of them don't attend lectures or don't go to do rotations because the profs are lenient (for foreigners only apparently, natives are very fucking strict, for example, I'm not allowed to miss a single rotation and I'm allowed to miss only 2 lectures.) I made some foreign friends when I had sports classes (it was general medicine students combined) and most of them told me they couldn't care less about rotations and are afraid to put a single finger on the patient kek. Yikes, dipyrone for a patient that has nothing (somatically) wrong with them. I would prescribe something less risky if anything at all. Well, so far it didn't fucked her up, so I guess it's not that big of a deal, honestly. If she takes one a day it's really nothing to worry about. But regarding the quote, I learned this in the ER first time, when the attending interacted with hypochondriacs and mom reminded it to me today. What would you prescribe instead?

However when you go to a new doctor and request specific medication, citing inane bullshit reasons like gum pain, you look like an addict. Poor bedside manner is a good enough reason to change providers in my opinion.

Is MD/PhD a meme or should I just go pure PhD? I want to go into academic medicine, and help discover shit, but also want to go to a highly ranked school (Top 30)
>inb4 prestige doesnt matter
because of the absolutely retarded networking/facility advantage such top schools give you in regards to research specifically, it matters a lot in regards to medicine. Especially since the top 30 are basically the only unis actually getting shit done in this field. As for stats: Currently have 3.71 cum gpa but 3.83 science, 517 MCAT, 2 Semesters of research exp,~100 hours non clinical volunteering, and 0 clinical hours (I know im retarded and need to pump clinical numbers up before applying). On top of my already decent stats for anyone im also (((URM))) I mention it because it would only help in Md/PhD programs, not pure PhD programs where they dont give a fuck about your background; going pure phd would probably limit the probability of a prestigious uni taking me, and competition is fierce out there. If it matters in your analysis of my situation, I literally do not give a fuck about the opportunity cost of the income lost while in school because im one of those fags who truly love the science of it all and getting to work at a well funded uni doijg something I love is worth the loss in money, so i dont care about how just being an MD btfo’s the research route income wise

To reiterate: Any tips or resources you guys have for people like me who are curious about the efficacy of Md/PhD for someone interested in medical research? Is it worth it or just a meme? Should i just go for a PhD even if it hampers the prestige of where I go?
