I think she is quite wrong regarding beauty. It's true that there is no requirement for all theories to be beautiful, but she does not give due consideration to that fact that all known theories which are correct are both correct and beautiful. Therefore, even though there is no guarantee that the next theory will also be beautiful, scientists who have no idea what the next theory will look like or how to find it are well motivated to look for a beautiful theory. Sabine seems to argue that they are not well motivated to do so, and that out of the infinite sea of possibly theories she thinks scientists would be correct to just grasp for the straw of any random theory rather than grasping for the straw of any random beautiful theory. Grasping at any random straw is ok, but her argument that grasping for a random beautiful straw is somehow wrong is mind boggling to me coming as it does from a very reasonable seeming woman.

I hate this kind of thinking and my main area of research is high temperature superconductivity. Science is a tiny part of the national budget and there is a significant amount of cross-pollination between ideas from high energy physics and advanced condensed matter physics.

I'm currently collaborating with a nuclear physics group that do nonperturbative solutions of Yang-Mills & QCD, and there is a lot of overlap in the math which leads to advances in both. Their stuff with exact solutions reduces to areas in my specialty, and some of our problems with quenches relate to theirs. And the guys I'm working with worship the experimental evidence that comes out of the ALICE experiment at the LHC.

Better colliders -> more experimental evidence and new physics discovered -> new ideas -> everyone in other fields can profit if the math carries over.

The correct way to approach this is that we need a broad and diversified portfolio of science research where you have many research groups pursuing different fields of research in parallel. You can't make a single field advance faster by putting all your manpower into it just like you can't have nine mothers make a baby in one month, there are strong diminishing returns.

YouTube nobodies are the worst kind of nobodies. If you're going to have an audience of 10 anyway, why not just do some kind of Physics Day in the local public library?

so expensive to make particle colliders, let's cut 100% of their funding and transfer it so it will make up for 3% of the "spacetime vortex military Skunkworks Supersecret Werethebestatsciencesogiveuslike9million" expenditures

ahahahahaha i didn't see this! (Lubos' blog usually pretty ridiculous)
>Furthermore, I don’t see how she can claim that you damaged her reputation as a popular writer of HEP, either. Such a claim is too vague and nebulous to carry any weight in the court of law. Plus, it’s fairly easy to prove that some of the most farfetched, out-of-the-mainstream writers of popular physics sell the most books or get the most opportunities to write opinion pieces in, say, the NYT. Dr. Hossenfelder is a perfect example of this. Thanks to the wacky, upside-down world of social media, the more out of the mainstream you are as a practicing theoretical physicist, the more marketable you are as a writer of popular physics.

>Therefore, Lubos, by you exposing and highlighting the fact that Dr. Hossenfelder is way out of the mainstream in terms of theoretical physics, you have actually increased Dr. Hossenfelder’s marketability as a writer of popular physics. Therefore, if anything, she should be paying you, not suing you for defamation. I think someone with strong expertise in civil liberties law could turn Dr. Hossenfelder’s defamation case on its head and make the case that she owes you, not the other way around.

basically a case of two washed up former physicists getting into a blog battle. those two got in a big fight over Strummia, where Lubos was like "yeah, reeee, women suck at physics, which brings me to why sabine is a BITCH" and those two got in a /pol/-tier flamewar over whether women suck at physics
