James Holmes was a mentally disturbed genius like the Unabomber. But his field was in neuroscience rather than mathematics.

Does anyone know where I can take a look at his research? Are there any published papers by Holmes?

And even though he is mentally disturbed, it seems like a waste letting his intellect rot away in prison. My understanding of prison labor is that prisoners are relegated to menial jobs. Is there any way for prison authorities to build a neuroscience lab in his prison for his own private use so that he could still continue to contribute to society rather than wasting taxpayer funds?

Is there any evidence his intellectual capacity remains after his mental breakdown?

Did he get an IQ test after incarceration?

I'm pretty sure no respected prison would allow a lab to exist inside it's facilities for security reasons.

>>10524867
I'd imagine it would work in a similar way to a military lab that handles stuff like anthrax. The entrances/exits would be monitored and controlled so that only Holmes can enter and not the other prisoners. There would be a patting down process similar to airports so that nothing dangerous leaves the lab. Holmes' research assistants would also be prison staff and would keep a close eye on him as he does his experiments and report back to the prison warden.

No, I've always been interested in geniuses.

I think it's stupid that our prison system automatically assumes that prisoners are only good for menial labor. I mean, most of them probably are but not all. It seems like a waste to let a genius mind that could literally provide society with the cure for Alzheimer's or a solution to the Millennium Prize problems rot with the others.

If you went on a killing spree or some other life-sentencing crime, you don't deserve to contribute to society. I don't care if you're a high IQ professor or a street beggar, by committing a crime to that degree you have made the decision that the rest of humanity is better off without you included. That's not to say that I don't believe in rehabilitation, but if you're in there for life then you're too far gone.

None of what you've listed is really that extraordinary. There are probably over a hundred people of equal or greater demonstrated ability who don't have access to even remotely the same privileges you are proposing for a criminal.

Extralegal measures have been demonstrated in the past for individuals of rare ability but this person is not rare enough to justify the treatment.

The Russian inventor was a POW, wasn't he? I'm not sure if you could compare that to a mentally ill civilian who murdered innocent citizens. These seem to be in the context of conflict rather than purely criminal acts. Same with the researchers, except in reverse where instead of giving more liberty to the perpetrators, the victims are getting exploited further.

I forget where I read it. I think maybe it was Naum Lazarevich Gurvich or someone similar. Maybe some other invention than defibrillation as well. But the scientist was soviet born, and despite the government being suspicious of them, the Soviets decided not to send him/her to the gulag for treason because he/she was too valuable.

But no, not a mentally ill civillian who committed murder. And to my point, I think if anything, they should put this guy to work on a computer.

This guy's accomplishments aren't even that great...it says that his project at the internship at the Salk institute (which many others participated in) wasn't even finished. And then he went to UC Riverside, which isn't exactly an amazing school. And everyone gets a "scholarship" if they go into a PhD program, it's called a stipend. Nobody should be doing an unpaid PhD.

This guy is only as smart as every other PhD student; he isn't some "genius". He's probably even less smart than the average PhD student, as he couldn't handle the workload. Not every sort of smart crazy guy is a "genius".

At least the Unabomber was somewhat of a child prodigy, as he went to Harvard when he was 16. This guy is just slightly above average intelligence
