Newton comes nowhere near a top 10 all time. Dude was a christ worshiper and whose work in physics was literally motivated to prove that God exists. Also, like half of his work is on alchemy.

Not defending Newton, but this is irrelevant. Maxwell was a Christian too, and was extremely smart.

Not to Newton level degrees. I didn't mean to imply that anyone who believes in God isn't intelligent, just that Newton's only desire was for God. Dude was spooked beyond all known levels.

Is it possible Newton was more afraid of the Church, especially since he was dabbling in heresy with his work on how the world works? He may have been very sensitive to make sure what he said was couched in religious terms so it would be acceptable to the Church lest his career got ruined. Just a thought.

What do you think desire for God is if not that? There is great value to be found in myth and fairytale, even if it can't be quantified. Working for the benefit of mankind without selfishness is quite literally "doing God's work" anon.

Calvin was a main theologist of this topic. The issue comes down to whether theologically it is better to “do good works” or to have “faith alone.”

my perspective is that faith is worth jack shit, good works are what one should value in life, and if god exists (which i see no evidence of) he should at least put my good works into his heaven equation

>> No.10499571

>>10499259
I think this was definitely true for plenty of people, but just from reading some of Newton's work and intention and followers like Clarke, it just seems like he was super-committed to God.
Maybe the other anons are right though, maybe his God-drive was what activated his genius gene (and his thousands of hours working on alchemy keke).

>> No.10499600

>>10499563
Doing good works is clearly superior. Faith without action is not faith, but the desire for faith. Framing the question in this way is problematic I think, as you are trying to weigh sources of value (reward in this life and reward after death) that are fundamentally disparite. Faith in God to me means faith that "good" has value at all outside some base hedonistic framework (I want to feel pleasure and avoid pain). So on one hand I totally agree with you. On the other, the idea that faith is worth jack shit seems foolish. Whether it is faith in God or anything else, you have faith that "good" and "truth" are real and worth working for. You see faith as an obsticle to that end, I see it as the only way to get there. If you truly don't believe in any sort of higher power why do you put any stock in the experience of others above your own?

>> No.10499621

>>10499600
honestly i'm done with the theology argument. in fact that's against the rules here.... but just to answer your question:
>If you truly don't believe in any sort of higher power why do you put any stock in the experience of others above your own?
i'm not sure i do. in fact i think scientists are the best at not taking claims at face value, but instead analyzing the logic involved and making sure it clicks with their own theoretical understanding of reality. being skeptical is GOOD in science; not so at church.

and also, hedonism is not the only reason an atheistic person (not that i am one, i consider myself an agnostic) would value good works. it is easy to imagine a person who values 1) future fame past their lifetime, 2) benefiting humanity, just because they're a nice person, or 3) because they have some selfish interest in their offspring and future descendants, regardless of their own pleasures and pains

>> No.10499955

>>10499621
I think those are all common explanations, but that without a God they are simply weak minded bullshit. The meme that the church doesn't benefit from any skepticism is blatently false. If people were never skeptical about the nature of God then religion would never have been invented. There cannot be belief without skepticism. Working in theology does require you to hold certain axioms to be true if you want to advance your understanding though. Math is established on common sense axioms in the same way. 1=1 just because it does. 1=1 because it just feels obviously true. In the same way you use the basic axioms of math and end up at calculus and string theory, you use basic axioms like God exists and God is good etc to make (good) religion. Yes it's all dogma, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have the potential to be logically consistent. There is debate to be sure about what axioms about God are true, and I think everyone should decide that for themselves. I think it is unwise though to say that you shouldn't force yourself to decide an answer for yourself just because alternate explanations exist.
To be clear I'm not suggesting you are some fedora fool. The way most people approach religion today is honestly disgusting. I just want to clarify what I mean more clearly.
