You're overthinking it. From the premises, the only thing that can be known about what the first one said is that it can't be "I am a carpal", from which the rest of the argument follows. That tells you nothing about whether the first is a carpal or a tarsal, because even if it were a carpal, "it said it was a carpal" would still be a lie.
