Whether it is true or not, there is no experiment you could (realistically) perform to elucidate the answer. Best to leave it in the hands of philosophers for now

>> No.10443735

Isn't it true according to quantum mechanics? Since entropy can be reversed by pure chance, and with enough time it will happen.

Nah, dark energy seems to imply heat death.

Its more of a thought experiment designed to get you to accept your past, your current situation, and to live life to its fullest leading the best one you can going forward.

I think the whole point of his idea is that it is inaccessible to empirical inquiry. It is totally inscrutable to science. You can believe it, as I do. But that's all you can do.

To elaborate, the reason I believe Nietzsche's idea is so compelling is precisely because of physics. Physics has shown beyond the shadow of any doubt that what we perceive as "the present moment" is relative to the observer. But it hasn't shown why that it is. And it likely never will. Eternal return is a likely, if not demonstrable, explanation.

Nietzsche's idea is divorced from entropy or any other physical concepts. What he's talking about is purely just perception of reality, not physical processes themselves. All the atoms in the universe will not reverse their trajectories and follow the "forward" arrow of time anew. That's not what he's saying. He is only talking about the perception of the passage of time by an observer. Not time itself.

this idea has nothing to do with physics, not that it can even be proved or tested for at all. the theory came up in a a thought experiment in which neitzche tries to demonstrate the what the psychology of an ubermensch should be; they should love life so much, that heaven for them would be to live the same exact life over and over and over again for infinity. It was a criticism of the concept of the "true world" that so many religions abuse.

It's literally just a thought experiment like >>10444434 said. Has nothing to do with physics.

OP set this up all wrong. "Physical ideas" like this may not have anything to do with the field of physics, but they are nonetheless related to physical existence.

It makes sense. Poland and Germany have an age-old frienemy relationship. Culminating, as we all know, in the greatest war in history. The word for a German person in Polish literally means "deaf mute" or "a person who is unable to speak".

Philosophers, at least the self-described ones at university philosophy departments, have mostly veered off into the same inane obscurantism that plagues the rest of the humanities. That isn't to say philosophy is dead, it's often just something performed tangentially as a byproduct of innovation in other fields.
