>> No.10424229

Lol, Boeing's crewed flight is guaranteed to happen in 2020, because they had to scrap their uncrewed capsule and switch it with the Abort test capsule due to the hypergolic "leak".

>"This was passed on to me, but needs checking. Trying to get my head around it, so a copy and paste:

>They have substituted the Starliner that was to fly on the demo flight, to replace the damaged Starliner that was to be used on the abort test.

>They are then going to use the Starliner that is still in production that was meant for the first manned flight, as the demo flight test article.

>The second "manned" flight Starliner that is still only half built, will be then used on the first manned flight and likely to be 2020.

>So, if I'm reading that correctly before we attempt to get an official answer (questionable if they will even answer it), OFT Starliner is now the abort test vehicle. CFT Starliner is now OFT (flying first, which we had heard). Another new Starliner - in production - is now CFT".

The leak was a minor simulations related issue that was quickly resolved.

Dragon still has some problems related to high risk cryo propellant loading and parachutes.

I am sure if this spacex flight is successful more issues will be discovered that will delay its crew launch well beyond the Starliner.

correct, that’s one of the big goals for this test flight. Previously cargo dragons were all “berthed”—grabbed by canadarm and attatched to the station by the station. Not really.
New Glenn is a much larger rocket that'll offer less flexibility in launches because of its higher capability. They'll likely undersell it like everything Amazon does in order to grab more market, but the problem is that it is cornering a shrinking segment of the market and baby launch services like Electron are going to gobble up the expanding areas of the market.
By the time New Glenn comes to market there'll be hardly anything launching that needs it and it will just have to scrape together a bunch of rideshares.

Virtually nothing requires 45tons to LEO, which means NG will be launching well below capacity for almost every launch, which will make the launch costs relatively expensive.
They can try to boost the payload with rideshares, but this is where the small launchers are going to erode the market, by providing cheap access into specific orbits instead of having to go with a rideshare and end up in less optimal orbits.

Because just as >>10428321 described, mega constellations are currently memes. They're unproven, require massive investment and the case for profit is sketchy. GEO satellites are the bread and butter of commercial launches and Blue have only 2 scheduled so far, one off Inmarsat and another of a sketchy Japanese startup. So if these meme constellations fail Blue is in hot water. I'm very sceptical of Starlink to but hope the satellite R&D could be used for developing Mars communication infrastructure.

Actually scratch the last sentence because that's wrong.

Anyway, these mega constellations will likely use a variety of launch providers for the simple fact that putting too many eggs in one basket would be higher risk. Any 100+ dispenser used for one of these constellations would be new and if one failed that would be a lot of sats burning up, unless launched on Starship which would just bring them back to Earth presumably. So even if NG could launch 200 at once I doubt we would see it because that's a lot that could go wrong.

OneWeb have also bought a fuck ton of Soyuz and Virgin Orbit launches, as well as signing for an Ariane 62 launch. Their definitely not putting all their eggs in one basket. Looks great, but you're right in that they'll need a significantly beefed up suit for EVA, although with new tension suit designs a modernized EVA suit might not need to be massively more bulky, especially with the introduction of tougher materials like vectran which are tougher than kevlar used in current suits and thus should require fewer layers. I think you're getting confused. You don't go EVA during launch or decent.
EVA is for activities outside the vheicle in orbit or space. So no they don't need a beefed up cooling unit because space is already cold.

You don't need thick gloves to protect from burns because you aren't touching the sides of the ship like some bogan hanging his arm out of his ute pointing at sheilas on the street and tapping the side of the car, mate

But yeah, some specific launch viewing areas at the centers themselves cost money.

here's one good guide http://www.launchphotography.com/Delta_4_Atlas_5_Falcon_9_Launch_Viewing.html

I see where you're coming from now, I meant flight as in ascent and descent, not flight as in the whole mission involving orbit and stationary docking

So NASA is trying to piggyback ride on SpaceX succes and popularity?

>> No.10429951

This is actually one of the big things I want to see about SpaceX's surface-to-surface plan. Gwynne Shotwell has personally promoted that, so I expect SpaceX really thinks they can pull it off.
If they manage to solve the rocket's reliability concerns, they need a fool-proof emergency depressurization system for that kind of passenger service. One that can be applied in under 14 seconds.

I expect them to have everyone wear at least half-masks for the flight. At least initially the experience of having to apply extra "survival gear" will add to the experience of going through spaceflight to spare yourself 16 hours of being seated next to a toddler.

one of the funny conundrums of high speed travel is how LONG it takes to do it. I often fly between DIA and BOS, a 4.5 hour flight. But, it takes an hour to drive to the airport, 30 min for security, then another 45 min for boarding and pushing back. Then 45 min for disembarking and getting my bags. That's three extra hours of bullshit to deal with, ontop of a speedy 4.5 hour flight! I can easily see E2E being hampered by each flight taking total like 10 hours when you include prep and stuff, even if the launch itself is 30 minutes.

awesome digits, they're as good as your description of the problem. Unless you're travelling a very long way, surface-to-surface intercontinental rocket travel is not going to be faster than choosing something simpler.
Gwynne even noted that the rocket flight would be faster than the ferry ride to and from the floating platform the rocket would launch and land from. Sure, three or four hours (including flight and travel to and from the spaceport) is FANTASTIC for extra-long-range travel, but it makes no sense for anything less than travelling about a quarter of the Earth's surface in one hop.

It irks me they they not only cut the feed to the first stage landing (because the percentage of recovery is lowish (bad for PR seeing a stage explode on a pad)), but they replay it in a way to make it seems like it's live. If you don't want to show us the warts and all don't fucking hide the fact, it's dishonest for people with half-a-brain.
