ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. The year is 2019 and the United States, a supposed 1st world country, is STILL using this retarded measurement system. I have to spend time learning this bullshit in school because of ONE stubborn country proud of their ignorance. Fuck the Imperial System and DEATH TO AMERICA!

I'm fine with either system. Metric is (usually) internally consistent and regular. Imperial deals with scales that are easier to conceptualize. I tend to prefer Metric because that's what I grew up using.

My only major misgiving with Imperial is how poorly it handles mass. Sure there's pounds, but that's a unit of weight not mass. Slug is the Imperial unit for mass, but most equations dealing with Imperial don't use it, they use pounds and just put in a gravity term to make the units work out. It feels cumbersome to deal with, and it easily complicates things. Especially if both mass and force appear in a set of equations, because you have to deal with both pounds as a mass and pounds as a force. And then theres that whole lbf vs lbm issue. I wish Imperial just settled with a unit of mass and stuck with it.

Imagine if China and Germany both came up with their own measurement systems that still used base 10 but had different sizes and names because fuck you. So you would have to learn 4 different measurement systems due to international trade. That is why metric was invented, to have a global universal system. Everyone but the United States and shitholes like Liberia got the memo. What is Anerica’s excuse?

Imperial is objectively better for practical use.
How long is an inch? Take the distance between your eyes.
How long is a foot? Well, your foot.

>B.BUT UMM ACTUALLY MY FOOT IS SMALLER THAN THAT
Then you simply don't get to measure, bitch. This is for NORMAL PEOPLE, not freaks of nature.

What are some everyday objects (that are not rulers) that you can use to get metric measurements? If you're naked in the woods and have literally nothing, how do you measure using metric?

Heh, thought so.

this is the only good answer

seriously tho, I live in a country that uses metric so that's what I feel comfortable but the best reason I've heard in favor of the imperial foot and mile (and I totally agree) is that is a "human" measure it has a "human root" , and its a historical part of the western civilization from the ancient greeks (even before) to the present. I really like this historical reason.

its kinda interesting to think that the numer 1 nation on this planet came to be using this "cumbersome" system...

How the fuck are you supposed to do that

Measure your hands, people. For instance, I know that the tip of my index finger to the first joint is about one inch, the length from my outstretched index finger to the first joint of my thumb is about six inches, the length of my hand is about eight inches, and the distance from my wrist to the outside of my elbow is a foot.

Nobody needs a kilofoot, that's why we don't use metric. Feet and meters don't matter at that scale.

We do need to divide by 3 though. Try doing that in the metricuck system.

>is a "human" measure it has a "human root"
absolute bullshit. the reason the metric system hasn't been implemented in the states is because we have an innate resistance to following any other country's example. that combined with an unhealthy dose of anglophilia among our political class. If the kilometer were invented in America, we would have switched long ago.

My children, one day you will all take the base-12pill and realize that SI is just as arbitrary as Imperial.
Only when we switch to a base-12 numeral system and natural units (with prefixes based on 12) will any unit system be able to claim superiority.

Remember that the US is fucking huge compared to a country in Europe. Imagine every road sign, speedometer, weight ballance, tape measure, radar installation, etc. being replaced in a country that spans almost two percent of the total land area of Earth. That will get expensive really quick. Not to mention the loss in economic output during the change due to not only delays from the changing process but also from errors due to confusion.

The US, for better or for worse, will stay with the Imperial system.
