Inflation and costs of living have continued to rise while wages have remained static since the 70s. Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck at jobs they hate. They also have a government that purely represents corporate interests(92% of the time the better funded candidate wins an election) who are allowed to exploit the public almost indiscriminately. You have the highest drug prices in the world, the highest cost of education, the highest amount of money paid for k-12 education with abysmal results, the highest violent crime of any first world country, and you're the only first world country where the average lifespan is actually fucking declining. Add to that the fact that your society is entirely based on materialism and hedonistic shallow pursuits and you're culturally and morally hollow. This leads the public to pursue escapism.
