Grad school and industry are the great equalizers. People care about your publish history / work experience / topics of interest. I did a math undergrad, engineering grad, and now I do research at a lab

Legitimately nobody gives a shit. Most academic research is an exercise in reading your peers' work and collaboration. 30% clever ideas and 70% hard work like the rest of the world. Incredibly fun and challenging work, but people forget that the actual challenge of a PhD is first and foremost consistency
