Or you've missed the point - that to draw a distinction between arrangements of matter only allows you to classify them according to some arbitrary measure of quality of consciousness when it seems more likely that consciousness either does not exist as we think it, or that what we think is out consciousness is another cell-like organisation functioning in a larger collection whose c.level we can't even begin to measure.

You're not wrong. Any and all forms of distribution are made up and ultimately have more to do with one's own perception of reality than reality itself.
That being said, it IS much easier to understand the world around us by classifying it, even if it gets stupid at times. Trying to tackle on everything that exists as virtually indistinguisable is useless on the pursuit of knowledge.
