As for the other answer, this was the only answer I've ever seen like that. Students often regurgitate definitions in an attempt to get some partial credit, and if the definitions are correct and relevant, I usually throw them a point. This particular student usually turned in either blank quizzes with no attempt at solving the problems, or wrote incomprehensible nonsense.

I have no idea. I think a lot of it comes from students not feeling confident about anything they do and they are scared to write down their thought processes for fear of being judged. which makes grading difficult because I don't want to destroy their confidence by marking them wrong, but I don't want to baby them and reward them for not learning the material.

I tend to think a lot about the way of doing exams nowadays.

There is a strong tendency to punish mistakes rather than rewarding correct answers.

It's a not a semantic difference but a sytanctic one but difference nonetheless.

I wonder if, in the times of AI and internet we could make unique designed exams so that different learning styles get respected.

e.g. I imagine a exam system where I could choose if I want to freely write about the topics or if I want a multiple choice heavy test.

Also I'm pretty sure there are so many old exams around the world and nothing is being done with them. I imagined one could scan through all the answers and use machine learning and crowdsourcing to come up with a question generation mechanism thats not just changing a variable.

I feel like science is already in the future but education is still in the past

I agree. When I grade, I feel like I'm rewarding students who did everything right or were on the right track, but I don't know if students actually see it this way. When I get bad marks, I rise to the challenge and strive to improve. It doesn't make me want to give up but not everyone is like that.

I never thought about exams the way you said. It would be really nice to have a fair and equitable system where students could be examined based upon their learning style. I've never had an oral exam, but I feel like that gives the students more of an opportunity to express what they know. It sounds more flexible but I don't know what that's like in practice.

I imagine that we train an AI with all past exams to make predictions about a possible answer space (e.g. there are stupid answers but there is also a lot of stuff students will never answer)

this way the machine has a feeling what kind of mistakes or errors are happening and can spot patterns (e.g. the first part of the answer of a students exam from 2019 is very similar to the first part of the answer of a 2013 exam and the second part is identical to a 2007 exam) you can then somewhat predict the points possible for the 2019 answer deduced from older answers.

The way I imagine it is that teacher don't check exams directly but let AI do the checking and they only monitor what AI evaluates and make correction if needed.

Oh I'm not the instructor, just a grader. Hope it doesn't sound like I'm LARPing as a prof. As for the AI stuff, I agree with you that AI and machine learning could really help with error assessment and evaluating the work based on past rubrics. This could also help alleviate implicit bias (although if the AI is assigning scores based on a teacher's past scores, this could just build the bias into the new system and perpetuate it).

I still wonder how to make students feel confident enough to write down more work. It would be a lot easier to grade if they would just explain to me what they're doing. I see so many apologies or pleas for reassurance ("am I doing this right?" or "is this correct so far?") on students' work.

I'm not complaining about it, in fact I've even played touhou 15 (I sucked though lol). What I want to know is why is it so popular here on /sci/ instead of any other number of anime? What's more, you pretty much never see low quality posts, bait, climate change denial, climate change denier-denial accompanied with touhou posts. They're almost always on high quality posts.
