it was a tough semester, but the hard work paid off. and i don't go to a uni where it's easy to get an A. they grade deflate here. i've gotten top of my class in most classes, and this is a top tier uni.

I met two kind of people during my time at uni:
There were those who excelled at the first 3 semesters but tanked miserably when the specialization classes came into play
And there were those who were average at the beginning semesters but performance and grades increased rapidly with specialization classes, I am in this second group. This second group also gets the most awards
Of course there are those who fail miserably during the first two semesters but they fall out quickly and doesn't count in any way.

Once in a while there is someone who excels both at the beginning and the spec but those are turboautists and nobody likes to work with them. They also don't count since they don't get jobs and stay in academia to be despised by both students and fellow teachers.

As I heard she has to repeat analytical chemistry again and didn't even try structural mechanics yet. When I finish she will be at least one year away from graduating, if she doesn't drop out.
We have rules of 2 retries of classes plus 1 additional retry for one class if the Dean agrees and automatic dropout if a final hasn't been taken in 3 years of first signing up.
Stuck up math chick is actually looking at dropping out with an A/B first two semesters.

My experience was two kinds of people: people who were competent but class structure was oriented towards group work, and being someone who actually wants to study and do stuff as a hobby, you're left out of social circles. The second group is cheaters, who will openly share work and copy from outside sources to get ahead.

My major didn't permit specialization (EE). There were a few directions the major went in (physics, electronics being the main), and they sort-of built on knowledge and expertise, but there wasn't a pure skill set.

What was your major?

I have a question for chem majors lile you.

How many lab sections a week do you have?
How many hours do those experiment and writing reports take?

>> No.10226953

>>10226876
Not chem major, matsci course and specialization
We do rely heavily on chemistry and physics/phys-chem so we might be a specialized chem major equivalent
Hungarian university, lab sections depends on how many lab oriented classes you take on in each semester. This means if you switch a class for next semester you are basically fucking yourself because labs are mandatory with entry tests (for teachers to check if you know what you should be doing) and you only have two bigger sessions at the end of each semester to repeat missed assignments. You simply can't repeat the entire semester plan.
After the preliminaries of the first 2-3 semesters we have about 50-50% labs per week and increasing towards the last semester.
Writing the reports depend on the class and topic, some labs you write a simple report by hand and hand it in at the end of the lab session, some you can hand the report in after 2 weeks, these are mandatory format with some study and homework-like calculation parts. Some labs you take entirely at home, like the mold and die design with CAD and FEM simulation labs where I had to work at home doing the single sheet of instructions but resulting in 2 weeks of heavy work and studying to actually do the final report, these are 20-30 pages minimum. most of it is just screenshot copy paste and drawing export, but still, fuck simulations.
So by the end of the course you had actual experience on all kinds of lab work and reports. Strangest was the optical microscopy labs where you had to draw what you saw by hand even though the microscopes had image export functions. It was fun, and I can draw most structures when needed to explain on a napkin if needed.

I once took a whole week to study for one exam, then on the day of the final I decided it wasn't enough and took another week and took the final on the next week. Two weeks of hard studying resulted in an A while if I took the final the first time I would've surely failed it hard.
BTW "hard study" means only focusing on one subject, I was careful to take a break hourly, a whole hour for lunch and dinner and a good night sleep. You don't learn shit if you are tired, no matter how hard you go at it.

Yes, we have several times for exams, usually once a week per class, sometimes twice. Calc and lin alg is usually tuesdays and thursdays, chem is tuesday, specialization classes are monday/wednesday/friday. You have 5 weeks for the exams plus one week before for "pre-exams" with the first two weeks available to repeat labs and finish assignment grades before colloquium (exams)
You can defer exams but you will only limit yourself if you take it too far or pile on exams. Most freshman students fail because they have 2-3 exams a day at the end of the exam period.

I started those in my second semester. That's not how math works. If you do average in beginning proof classes, you'll do average or worse in anything later on. I found those classes trivial and many of the specialized classes to be fun and interesting, and at times a bit challenging. But I'm also not a fucking moron so I study and work for long hours to understand everything even if it's tough. Stuff like PDEs, dyn systems, functional analysis, recursion theory. Most of my "specialized" experience is in analysis and logic.

Its just different teaching philosophies, and it varies by uni here. Basically they want you to not just be a single minded drone that only knows math shit, they want you to be able to speak competently on a wider variety of subjects and be a more interesting person as a result which helps in life. I think only Brown doesn’t have any sort of requirement you take a class outside your major.

4.0, brought my grade up to a 3.84 after 80 credit hours. 3.93 institutional but it's being dragged downed by my 3.63 CC classes I took while in HS :/ .

I live in the US, there's been this program called "Dual-enrollment" where highschool students can choose to take college classes and high school classes at the same time to try and get a credit edge while still in HS. I did it my junior and senior year full time just to get away from my school and reform myself, but I ended up getting a few B's along the way in some core classes unrelated to my major early on like a dumbass.
It shows permanently on your college/uni transcripts since schools want to see all college coursework you've done. Which is what makes it a bit risky.

Studying Physics, my lazy ass passed only 1/2 of first year’s classes(the physics stuff basically) and i didn’t study enough to pass this most of this semester’s classes. Problem is that the math classes feel so boring to study since the physics classes use really basic math so far. Please someone relate

But i do relate, as an economics student I didn't pass calculus 1 in my first semester and that delayed nearly half of my degree by one semester (Micro, macroeconomics and econometrics all require calculus here)

Any UK fags here?

I've only done two modules so far this semester in Biochem/Molbio and Microbio/CellBio (but they worth 30 credits each). So far I got 72% and 84% average for them respectively, but I'm anxious that my exams in January will fuck that all up since they're worth 60% of the module.

Nope, they are both double credit modules unfortunately. I will have half credit modules next semester though.

Mostly coursework (i.e. lab work & essays) and some short tests on statistics of biological data.

thats what im saying man. The math i use in physics so far (Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics etc) all familiar to me and im good at. The math i learn tho are not to be seen in any of these subjects, therefore making then rather boring to study on their own

It is okay if you get a few panic attacks during crunch time study, it means your brain is adapting at its hardest. It is only bad if the attacks remain and or get worse, best thing to do is remind you that no matter what happens the world will go on, and take walks in the best daylight, go out get some groceries, sit down in a cafe to drink an espresso or a tea, read printed news and just relax a bit. You will get back to your studies at a much better performance. Also don't skip on your night sleep, get rested or else you won't be able to process anything and you only waste your time.
Getting calm and rested is key to good studying. I followed this route and while I had trouble recalling anything right before the exam, when I sat down and looked at the questions I just wrote the answers routinely. Many smugness ensued afterwards :3
