I've spent most of my undergrad taking Pre-Med classes and boosting my clinical and volunteering experiences with the expectation of going to medical school. Now, I fear that we are soon going to live in a country where doctors won't be fairly compensated, so I don't want to be pre-med anymore.

Unfortunately, most of my experience has been in clinical, patient-based roles. I also have some decent research experience of a few years, but no papers or publications or anything. My GPA is decent, it'll be about a 3.70 when I graduate (I am about to start my last semester of my senior year)

How fucked am I for jobs? I graduate in 6 months. Is there ANYTHING I can get with a BA in Biology? How do biology majors get good jobs? Should I get a Masters in something? I'm definitely not getting a PhD, I might as well go to Med school for all that work. I want a job that makes at least 6 figures

yeah shitty lab work, basically no research or teaching positions worth anything. Its doctorate or bust mate, I'm in the same boat that's why I'm taking a math or physics double major so i can get an industry job if I can't get PhD. Its really terrible, Bio is by far the most interesting scientific field with endless things to work on and reformulate but the glut of women, indians, chinese and sheer volume of useful brainlets makes it a terrible career choice. It was either that or Med school and I hate doctors, patients, hospitals and the HC industry. Good luck to you.

Get CS major or Math major if you're worried. Bioinformatics is really big right now, Genetics is too and Bioengineering.

Medicine is going to be socialised in every nation very soon. Dont risk going in because you will not make decent money any more. Competition for doctor positions in cities is HUGE and the jobs left are rural.

Listen idiot, if you're going to be going a half a million dollars in debt and 7-9 years of intense studying and life commitments during your 20's, it's not unreasonable to be fairly compensated. And if med schools continue being as costly and time-consuming as they are now, doctors BETTER be damn well paid adequately for it, so yes I want to go into it only if I know I'll be able to get a 300K+ salary

>> No.10222035

There's a big spectrum between 6 figures. Especially when you're going half a million dollars in debt and giving up your entire 20's, 100K isn't worth doing that. In that instance, I would rather do something else. I believe it's only worth it if doctors make 250K at MINIMUM

>How fucked am I for jobs? I graduate in 6 months. Is there ANYTHING I can get with a BA in Biology? How do biology majors get good jobs?
If you want to stay in research and/or science, my advice is work as a tech in an academic lab for a few years. There is not much more you can do. The pay isn't great, but you'll have more autonomy than you would in industry (you'd be pretty much confined to QC-type jobs in small biotechs and CROs). Put in two or three years; help manage a lab, run a project, get your name some on some papers, set-up a collaboration, get a letter of rec or two. This experience will open doors that are not available just out of undergrad.

Did that myself for a few years. First-year out of undergrad, pretty much job-hopped in temp positions at small biotechs. (This was in a huge biotech hub.) Then, got a job as a tech. There were a bunch of us who were in a similar position, just out of undergrad with a BA/BS in biology or molecular biology or biochemistry, whatever, in different labs at the same school. After a few years (and this was about 5 years ago by now), people ended up doing different things. Some went to big pharma or biotech R&D as RAs/SRAs (basically, non-PhD scientist), PhD programs, med school, public health, business development in pharma, technical sales.

>Should I get a Masters in something? I'm definitely not getting a PhD, I might as well go to Med school for all that work. I want a job that makes at least 6 figures
You can make six-figures as a PhD; many PhDs do make that much money. But, there should be other reasons you want to do a PhD besides that.

These would have happened regardless, so saying that monetary gain is your sole reason for committing to medicine is stupid.

What do you mean that would happen regardless? I’m saying it wouldn’t be worth it (to me) to go into all that debt and spend all that time if I wasn’t rewarded adequately. Why is it okay for every other worker on the planet to request fair compensation, but doctors are supposed to toil and overwork and not demand more pay at the risk of sounding “selfish” and “in the profession for the wrong reasons”?

And who said I don’t like hard work? There’s a difference between working hard and doing unnecessary work. Getting a BS does nothing to make me more viable for medical school, so why do it? I use that time doing more research and volunteering so I’m a more competitive applicant

Look, nobody here likes you. You clearly don't like science. You are in it for the money, and nothing more. You will not get into med school with that attitude and you will not make a good doctor. >> No.10222982

You're gonna hate all of the high paying jobs. In math/CS, they're usually locked behind a PhD anyway. The PhD in CS (for anything that matters anyway, mostly theory, filled with math students who wanted to get more funding, and systems, which is booming right now; I am not including the dime a dozen ML researcher) isn't trivial and makes you go down the road in math and science. Obviously the math PhD does this too. The masters programs for CS is a meme unless you go out of your way to take the actual PhD theory courses.

All of the big money jobs include some work. No, you can't just get them by doing volunteer hours. Yes, you will have to learn how to think outside the box. If you don't like it, the best thing you can do is leave and something like business or the trades, both of which have a lot of money attached to them

I doubt it. I live in socialist Canada and my father made $450,000 last year as a lowly G.P. If that's not enough for you specialists make double that and work less hours.

Doctors still make bank and will always make bank, if I was you I'd take the MCAT and try to get into any M.D or even D.O school that will take you. Don't let your degree, volunteering hours, and research experience go to waste.

If they did this in America 80% of students at every medical school would be asians.
