When can we finally admit that math is useless for the everyday jackass? Like, look, I'm gonna be real with you all, I hated math in school and I know most people did, and every time we asked the teacher when we we going to use it in life, they always shrugged it off with some bullshit answer that never actually answered the question. Fuck these assholes. I'm a math major. I understand the intrinsic value of math and it's various applications, but I'll guarandamntee you that the vast majority of the populous has no reason to use math in real life. Don't give me the bullshit guise of "muh education" either. It's no secret that public school is a government sanctioned brainwashing camp/prison for young people. Now really /sci/, please give me a straight answer. I love math, and I'm going into a math oriented field, but I will never get over, nor forgive those bastards for their bullshit I had to learn in highschool.
tl;dr: Middle school math is all you need to be a functioning member of society, prove me wrong.

From a eugenic perspective it might be healthier or more productive to have more of the population devevlop the faculties required for more complex math.

I'll give credit to this on a scientific and philosophical basis, but it doens't really address the lack of a pragmatic reasoning, which is what the question is usually about when kids ask their teachers this question. I do have to thank you dearly, however, for being the first person to ever give me a halfway decent answer to that question. Cheers to you Anon.

High school students know literally no math.
Math majors also know literally no math.
You need to be at least a grad student to say "I know something".

Because it's much easier to learn at that age when you don't know what you want to do with your life than later when you're trying to get occupational skills.
Imagine starting college with just basic arithmetic, just imagine.

You're right about the direct practical applications evading most people, there isn't really a good practical reason other than that for people to learn it except perhaps as an exercise in discipline? We could all do with a lot more discipline.

I mean, a lot of individuals actually will use some sort of rudimentary computations in their day to day lives.

E.g.,
Tradesman make measurements, waiters use percentage calculations, cashiers use addition and subtraction, etc.

Algebra and trigonometry are a little more specialized, but I think the reasoning for teaching that in high school is more because most high schools nowadays are meant to function as preparatories for higher education.

And higher education becomes worth less and less while costing more and more each year. Make sure you buy a gun, or two, or 10 my friend, because the future doesn't look bright.

In our country you need a hs degree to be allowed to bear firearms. This is a good example: math, and all the other "unnecessary" stuff you learn there, are to prove, that you can become a responsible and useful member of our society, given your intellect capability to accomodate new ideas. Thus, it feels right, to "reward" those who finish hs, with some "excess rights".

Our education systems are quite fucked up. Instead of giving importance to things which will be relevant in real life like logic or statistics, the middle school math syllabus focuses on retarded algebra and geometry problems which people will never end up using.

Depends on if you see education as training for the workplace. If so why bother teaching history, poetry, geography etc.

Math taught in schools is pure logic. It isn't taught so that you can use the quadratic formula one day once in your life time. It is taught so that your tiny little brain can become a big amd juicy one. So that you can REASON. the problem is, it's not taught correctly and this is how you get liberals, sjws, blm, nazis, commies, and pretty much all the scum on earth. Because they haven't developed logical reasoning amd critical thinking skills, which are both capable of being learnt with the help of school math.

The biggest failure of this is that you assume that others are as intelligent as you, or capable of the same kind of intelligence without overcoming a handicap beyond the willpower of the vast majority. People have always been stupid, and we always ill be stupid. Even people like you and I who are above average in intelligence are still stupid, we're just less stupid than everyone else. Nations will rise and fall, civilizations will burn, generations upon generations will pass, but we will never get any smarter. Even if we were to somehow master our own eugenics, it would all go to hell at some point or another because we are doomed to repeat our cycles of guilt until we inevitably destroy ourselves. You have good intentions, but in the end, your nativity will be your downfall.

Bruh, i was literally a math brainlet up until 11th grade when I realized what was the purpose of math taught in school, which is what I pointed out - teaching you to think! So i literally grabbed all the textbooks and khanacademy and learned all the higj school math. I just finished my bach, with top scores in calc 1-2, linear algebra, stats (econ major). All that set forth by the realization i had in 11th grade. Also btw up until that moment i had no idea what to do. Yes i agree nobody learns to think critically and logically from age 3, but it is the teacher's and parents role to help you with that, the same they taught you to ride a bike. But moat importantly, YOU have to realize the importance yourself, otherwise, you will always be "bad at math" and "you'll never use this in real life".

Everyone, including you, is missing a very important point.

Math is useful for everyone. Everyone needs to absolutely MASTER basic arithmetic, fractions, percentages, averages, etc.

High school algebraic techniques are not relevant to most careers, however it is important that we teach this. In order to be sucessful in algebra, you have to master arithmetic to the point you know it in your sleep. Thus, by learning algebra to a satisfactory standard, you master arithmetic, which is the most relevant for the average wagecuck.

So, for the average brainlet wagecuck to master arithmetic, we run them through the ringer with algebra which they hilariously struggle with.

Math is a barrier for a lot of STEM fields, kids who have a passing interest in one of those fields needs to develop said strong basis in math; however most kids at that age are dumb and do not truly know what they want to do when they become adults meaning that we need to come to a lowest common denominator agreement with a system in place for students who have already decided that the field they want to go in is STEM related so they can further develop their skills in higher level math classes. Its not the best solution but I doubt you can come up with a better one.
