i often see many post this guy as being one of the top 3 mathematicians ever or the best ever in many threads

but what did he exactly do?

You forgot number theory and matrix algebra.
Honestly, Gauss didn't really do that much amazing stuff, but a lot that he did do is used a lot.

Banneker was great, given his background. But he wasn't *excellent* in the way of leaving a legacy for all of humanity. We can never know whether Banneker would have been truly excellent had he received a proper education from an early age. But we do know that Gauss was excellent. Thus, no contest, Gauss wins.

The margin of this thread is to narrow to mention all his accomplishments.

But, he was the first to prove quadratic reciprocity.
He gave 7 different proofs for it
some of which used a version of galois theory
Before galois had invented galois theory.

"This 1793 edition of Benjamin Banneker's Almanack and Ephemeris features an annual calendar, statistical information, phases of the moon, astronomical data, and tide tables. Banneker's almanacs were unique because they featured social commentary and politically oriented literature. Some writings from this almanac include "A Plan of a Peace-Office, for the United States," "Extracts from the Debates in the Last Session of the British Parliament, Apr. 1792," "Extract from Jefferson's Notes on Virginia," and "Extract from Wilkinson's Appeal to England on Behalf of the Abused Africans." Please click "READ MORE" below for instructions for transcribing the tables in the almanac."

look, Banneker was a smart guy, exceptional even regarding the circumstances of his life and climate of the time.

He wrote 'Disquisitiones Arithmeticae' -- arguably the most influential book on number theory -- at the age of 21. Furthermore, he conjectured the prime number theorem when he was only 15. He did a lot more than just number theory. For example, I have a tattoo of his ruler and compass construction of the 17-gon, which he discovered at 19 years of age. I am proud to commemorate this man until my body rots.

>> No.10193076

Not only did it extensively feature applications of calculus and differential equations, which were new things at the time, it was basically the first physics textbook ever. Advances in physics had been pretty sparse up to that point. Principia
>first stated newton's laws
>stated newton's law of gravity
>single-handedly created mechanical studies
>contains the first real study of kinematics and dynamics

Principia set the stage for all subsequent physics to come. Seriously, nothing discovered before Newton matters when it comes to physics.

Yeah. I've been studying the Torah (for math related codes). I read the first three books recently, I now I'm starting reading the fourth book: Numbers. Now I wonder if the Levites were the ones in charge of writing down the scrolls. I think in Exodus, after the Israelites fully came out of Egypt, they wrote everything down. "Leviticus" and now Numbers come chronologically after all the part from before Egypt. I see my own Hebrew name Gershon as the first son of Levi, and I see in Numbers there's a lot of "Do what the Levites tell you. I am the Lord," and. "Make sure to give money to the Levites. I am the Lord," it reminded me of the way other people use my name on this website.

Just like it says "don't drink blood" it says even more strongly "don't misuse my name."

Intellectual achievements can't be discredited unless they aren't actually achievements or the credit is misplaced. The greatness of Newton's character can certainly be placed in doubt, but in the maths and sciences his personal character is never the focal point of any discussion anyways.
