people don't like that genetic superiority is possible through non-natural means. regarding curing/preventing diseases, this is more of an opinion in sociology than an actual question of biological ethics.
creating people to have certain traits will not remove their agency, and obviously, any research into something of that sort would be both extremely illegal and difficult to cover up. it's just fear of what the other nation with a separate legal system might do at this point. will China create a slave race 50 years from now to replace their suburbanite populations in their factories? would the EU start mandating that all newborns have to be a selective non-averaged artificial admixture of their entire population's genetic pool? what about if the US started creating super soldiers and >99% of them conveniently signed up for various military branches upon reaching the age of majority? no one knows who will be in power 50 years from now to make these decisions, so they're hesitant to progress anything as a result.
