First of all it's being heavily debated and currently those in favour of using the technology appear to be winning as they make a lot statements with respect to the benefits without any hard opposition so far. Currently even many religious politicians are in favour of exploiting this technology. The supposed opposition appears to be mainly a media invention while the actual barriers are building a legal framework to support it before using it in public.

Secondly CRISPR tech was mainly developed in the West (America and Europe). It is a Western technology.

Impressive.

With this most recent achievement, fate has in a single stroke, marked the decline of the west and spelled a new era of wondrous prosperity and peaceful global dominance for the Chinese dragon, which promises to firmly stand in sharp contrast to the historically bloody ascent of western powers and the cruel subjugation it brought to the humbler nations of the world. With the blessings of Chinese quantum direct-current electricity, quantum aircraft carriers and quantum enhanced railguns will be the instruments with which China affirms its noble stewardship of 21st century world politics and offers the non-western world a different option; an humanist alternative to the depredations of Western leadership and the opportunity for a more equitable and dignified multilateralism.

This is why you should keep your goddamn humanities and liberal arts classes in university. It is why the chemical industry in the West has the lowest death rate of any occupation, including farming. The problem with any nootropics is that the brain is designed to always work as well as it can. You can have androgenic steroids because the body isn't designed to be as muscular as it can be. If there was some extra compound your brain could produce to work better then it would already do it.

In vivo gene editing only really works on tissues that keep regenerating, like intestines, immune cells, liver etc. So we probably won't be able to gene edited someone smarter. Something like a computer interface is the best bet but im not entirely sure how that's even going to work.

What moral aversion?

We only have two major problems: (i) lack of a legal framework for gene clinics and (ii) life scientists will have to backtrack on on their stances on racial genetics (as some intelligence markers are missing in some races so the current theoretical way method to select zygotes with these markers will not work and it will have to be explained to certain couples why they will require far more expensive editing that are not currently possible).

The latter is not my opinion, it is what researchers discussed in a MIT technology review article on the issue a few months ago.

You might argue that "but they banned steroids!" Which is not true at all. They banned steroids in sports (because wisely, the ethical issue here is that when you push the technology to its limit you would have to dope far more than currently possible which will virtually gaurantee a short life span and side efdects) and unsafe recreational use. Meanwhile HRT is a common and regulated medical practise. As gene therapy will be if it proves to be safe.

This but unironically. What's probably going to happen is Africans are going to be outfit with more g-positive genes and researchers are going to call it a day. It's likely going to be a simpler optimization than trying to configure genetic cures for all the non-intelligence related shit that seem to plague the other races at higher rates, such as various cancers (sans few like prostate), multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, phocomelia, cleft lips, schizophrenia, etc. Additionally, given everyone's retarded boner for trying to find a link between race- IQ combined with Africa's economic impoverishment and propensity to take money in exchange for being clinical trial subjects, its probably highly likely most g-related genetics experiments will be proof of concept experiments focused on bringing Africans up and possibly past other humans. Assuming we continue down our current path and manage to totally isolate genes which impact IQ, it's going to become more apparent that we can create the optimized human faster by taking this route, rather than trying to clean all the miscellanous non-g related ailments and such in everyone else.

I’ll wait till I see the paper and definitive proof the ccr5 gene product is not being expressed along with proof there was no abberant genetic deletions or insertions.

Also note, this is technically easier than actually “fixing” a disease causing genetic allele because in this case they simply needed to knock down ccr5 expression to prevent HIV infection, not knock it down and then replace it with a functioning non disease causing gene product.

Considering washing the sperm/putting the mother on antiretrovirals is basically guaranteed to prevent HIV transmission from the father to children, this was a stupid endeavor and fraught with a high likelihood of risk compared to the alternatives.

We don’t even know if it was successful since there’s nothing published or released publically. It’s highly probable the whole process didn’t work and the children are simply HIV negative because father to child transmission happens but isn’t likely compared to other routes of transmission.

Ethically, this is insane and shouldn’t be encouraged by the developing world. Even the most meager definiton of Informed consent does not appear to be met in this case and we’re not talking about some ultra rare catastrophic orphan illness with no better prospects for treatment, this situation already has very tried and true treatment options with a high probability of success.

I personally would try to use any possibility to help my children, from education, free time activity or even genetic engineering. If the tech is avaible, one should use them to help one's child as best as one can. Love and support are the most important things a parent can give. Genetic engineering are no eugenics, no one is murdered or prevented from his happiness. Genetic engineering should of course have laws and regulation, so that a narcistic parent does not abuse its child or even worse if a state decides to create people for its self, this should not exist but using such tech to make it possible, that child has the greatest genetic chances is something very good.
Utilizing genetic editing to cure or help humans to have all possible benefits is as ethical as you can be.

Which makes this whole endeavor even more sketchy. He's been on leave from his research university since February and in that time he's enrolled 7 HIV serodiscordant couples where the father was positive and the mother negative in a trial for an "HIV vaccine". He claims the goal wasn't to prevent semen --> embryo transmission of HIV since it's pretty rare, but to render the resulting children resistant to HIV later in life. Then why bother utilizing HIV positive fathers at all in the trial.

The whole way he approached this and announced his results via youtube reeks of sensationalism over good science. Even if he was successful in attenuating ccr5 expression completely (which I still think is unlikely), the way he went about the entire endeavor reeks of attention whoring and sketchiness.

So the answer to this is yes.

Anyways what's relevant to the topic is that first world societies in general doesn't consider human life to have value before [insert arbitrary line said society has agreed on]. So if you can fuck with a human and figure out whether they're going to be deformed before then, and if the resulting thing still seems pretty human, people will probably be fine with it.

Also now that it's cool to mutilate and chemically fuck with children as they're growing human modification, even if there's a risk of messing up a person's life, might be more likely to be accepted.

The elite will use editing to keep themselves in power, and likely develop a new dichotomy of the phenotypical haves and the have-nots, which will make the medieval classism of the past look like children in a sandbox playing at exclusivity. What this new class becomes in the future is extremely difficult to predict, but you can bet it's always going to be a small portion of the population, up until it's wiped out.

Maybe it's just my inferiority complex kicking in but we shouldn't be calling or labeling these genetically altered humans ' Super Humans'.

Instead we should just term them 'Altered-Humans'. The term 'Super Human' makes it seem like us natural bred Humans are lackluster in comparison. But most of this gene editing is removing Genes, not adding so the Altered-Humans are the ones lacking Genes, therefore they are less Human.

Also who isn't to say that removing and adding genes won't have huge negative impacts on the Person later in life. Imagine being immune to all diseases but at the cost of your dick size or some shit. Newtons law states every action has an equal and opposite reaction. These babies will lack certain aspects of Humanity but gain.

The superhuman can become a cyborg too but it won't matter what his genes are when half his brain is replaced by implants. Not to mention gene editing is a permanent investment. >Newtons law states every action has an equal and opposite reaction. These babies will lack certain aspects of Humanity but gain.
No, D&D is not an accurate example of reality, someone with a genetic disability doesn't gain any points somewhere else. The nature of genetics is complex, but you can modify humans to have talents based on based genetic variation. We were able to identify DNA sequences that are the cause of some human talents and abilities. You can pre-natally modify a human to have a increased learning abilitiy and making him to have a perfect health among other possibilities. There exists DNA who are related to extraordinary ability and we can make it so that a human has the best balance of those without any negative effect, as long as those specific DNA strand aren't connected to each other.
Theorethically a natural one could have the same genetics than a engineered one but its far more improbable that such natural would have the best possible mix. One among 10 millions may have a genetic composition similiar to a genetic engineered human but the GEH has other benefits, he can have the best genetic variation his parents can give him and set those to greater benefit. But yeah calling such genetic modified humans 'designer babies' or 'superhumans' is quite dehumaniizing, those GEH will still be born as children and need love and support from their parents and surroundings.

The costs of those genetic modifiaction aren't that high, if you are wsetern middle-class you will be able to affort it. I personally would advocate that every human should get the right for genetic modification. As long as the good of the child and its potential and freedom is the main goal.
This tech will also come into a gradual pace and be distrubited just like the steam machine, electric power or computer were.

In most past genocides the minority was targeted by the majority.

Think of the things that only the elite members of a society had access to 1,000 years ago and compare them to those most everybody has access to today. The thing that is common between the elite of yesteryear and those of today is their power over others. Power tends to accrue more power, just as wealth aggregates. Isn't it funny that the advantages that were granted by birthright in medieval times are going to become tangible?

The most best allegory to gene-editing is medical care. The elite get the very best and everyone else muddles through with okay or suboptimal care. It will not be difficult for them to make a very large distinction genetically between themselves and others.

That is bullshit Western propoganda. The country was ravaged by one of the longest civil wars in human history not to mention the relatively gentle interjection of WWII. Explain to me how China was able to produce mechanised devisions and a modern airforce for the first time in their history following the civil war period? Mao's great leap forward industrialised the country and turned it into a modern superpower. They had famine in some provinces, but also developed a modern infractructure, education, manufacturing centre and modernised health care.

I know about the subject because one of the essay subject choices in my History class exam was literally on how straining relations between China and USSR was due to (i) USSR not sharing nukes and more pertinent to the current discussion (ii) the fact that China never followed a true Marxist model to begin with. This strain allowed the USA and China to become friends. Of course, stealing Moscow's friend was the perfect propoganda tool for the USA. Despite the fact that China didn't have to actually change any internal policies (and still haven't adequately changed according Western economists), the only real difference was the trade deals it got from the USA and other Western partners.

This all leads me back to my original point. The lack ethical analysis in China's past and current internal policies is precisely what caused the mass famine, the rapid shrinking of their natural ecosystems and resources which impoverished segments of their still largely agrarian inner provinces for the first time in their history.

Finally to build on the last paragraph; the atrocious working conditions of the workers is unsustainable and will have a negative impact long term. We are already seeing the result of this as the trade war has moved manufacturing back to the USA. The evidence of the artificial boost is now a glaring hole in China's GDP which cannot be filled with other economic sectors as was done in UK and USA.

does it honestly necessary follow that everybody will be a 200+ IQ ubermensch? Is it even possible for that matter? for example some genes have trade-offs, I'm sure there are genes relating to intelligence that subject the organism to trade-offs. Are there genes that linearly improve intelligence without any subsequent 'diminishments'?

No, it really isn’t. We trapped ourselves in that cycle, but China is making sure they don’t have to deal with any of that.

Do you really need 200 IQ? Why is everyone ignoring the big picture here. China can now breed a whole generation of servile worker bees with no aggression. Sure smart people are cool and all, but that’s never been in China’s gameplan. They steal and retool.

>It will not be difficult for them to make a very large distinction genetically between themselves and others.
You are implying there is something called "themselves" and "others". Surely there is such a social ladder but they are never clear cut and things enjoyed by the most wealthy and powerful people would be progressively expanded and enlarged so that peasants can also enjoy, despite maybe to a lesser degree and not as fast due to cost and such.
