I’ll wait till I see the paper and definitive proof the ccr5 gene product is not being expressed along with proof there was no abberant genetic deletions or insertions.

Also note, this is technically easier than actually “fixing” a disease causing genetic allele because in this case they simply needed to knock down ccr5 expression to prevent HIV infection, not knock it down and then replace it with a functioning non disease causing gene product.

Considering washing the sperm/putting the mother on antiretrovirals is basically guaranteed to prevent HIV transmission from the father to children, this was a stupid endeavor and fraught with a high likelihood of risk compared to the alternatives.

We don’t even know if it was successful since there’s nothing published or released publically. It’s highly probable the whole process didn’t work and the children are simply HIV negative because father to child transmission happens but isn’t likely compared to other routes of transmission.

Ethically, this is insane and shouldn’t be encouraged by the developing world. Even the most meager definiton of Informed consent does not appear to be met in this case and we’re not talking about some ultra rare catastrophic orphan illness with no better prospects for treatment, this situation already has very tried and true treatment options with a high probability of success.

No, D&D is not an accurate example of reality, someone with a genetic disability doesn't gain any points somewhere else. The nature of genetics is complex, but you can modify humans to have talents based on based genetic variation. We were able to identify DNA sequences that are the cause of some human talents and abilities. You can pre-natally modify a human to have a increased learning abilitiy and making him to have a perfect health among other possibilities. There exists DNA who are related to extraordinary ability and we can make it so that a human has the best balance of those without any negative effect, as long as those specific DNA strand aren't connected to each other.
Theorethically a natural one could have the same genetics than a engineered one but its far more improbable that such natural would have the best possible mix. One among 10 millions may have a genetic composition similiar to a genetic engineered human but the GEH has other benefits, he can have the best genetic variation his parents can give him and set those to greater benefit. But yeah calling such genetic modified humans 'designer babies' or 'superhumans' is quite dehumaniizing, those GEH will still be born as children and need love and support from their parents and surroundings.

Think of the things that only the elite members of a society had access to 1,000 years ago and compare them to those most everybody has access to today. The thing that is common between the elite of yesteryear and those of today is their power over others. Power tends to accrue more power, just as wealth aggregates. Finally to build on the last paragraph; the atrocious working conditions of the workers is unsustainable and will have a negative impact long term. We are already seeing the result of this as the trade war has moved manufacturing back to the USA. The evidence of the artificial boost is now a glaring hole in China's GDP which cannot be filled with other economic sectors as was done in UK and USA.

Surely there is such a social ladder but they are never clear cut and things enjoyed by the most wealthy and powerful people would be progressively expanded and enlarged so that peasants can also enjoy, despite maybe to a lesser degree and not as fast due to cost and such.
