I knew a Chinese guy going to an (admittedly fairly good) SLAC near my house that I didn't even go to who claimed to have gotten top marks on the gaokao. I asked him why he didn't just go to a top Chinese university which would have been cheaper, better ranked, and more familiar. He said that any half decent American school is considered far more prestigious than the best Chinese universities by employers back in Tianjin, and it's widely known that their universities are shit.

Yes, but I wonder how much of that is due to genetic predispositions and how much is due to historical accidents. Maybe Europeans lucked out with Christianity indoctrinating them with a specific set of productive values, even if maybe you’d have to be more stupid to believe in Christianity than the Eastern religions. They don't? There's the Asian American crowd that usually hangs around business and finance that tend to be a big presence in sororities and parties and an Asian American presence in STEM fields. The former tend to be big party animals. Those in engineering, math, and science tend to be fairly social within tight knit friend groups (not asian cliques, not necessarily super small groups either, but tight knit nonetheless) but aren't the westernized whitegirl types you're talking about. Pre med asian american students tend to be a toss up between these two identities.

The problem is twofold.

1) Presentation of self in society is a very big thing in China. Being able to present oneself as competent in society, better than the pack, exceptional, etc. is a big part of the social dance. Unfortunately, this often leads into platitudes about how the appearance of success matters a lot more than the reality of success, and part of getting close to someone is understanding and appreciating that they're not perfect.

Regardless, this is why "cheating is okay if you don't get caught, because getting ahead and looking better is most important" is a common idea in Chinese households. However, not everyone holds these beliefs; particularly, academic types and their families.

2) Institutions in China, especially lower education or the border of lower and higher education, tends to give out tests that are about vomiting as many "shut up and calculate" questions in a set amount of time. This is because having a test where each question isn't conceptually hard but answering all questions is a matter of memorization and recall (which is built by just rote practice of the material) make for tests that are

a) easy to write
b) easy to grade
c) effective at weeding out anyone who spent marginally less time on a trivial case

There are so many students in China that they employ this to weed out people, knowing full well that it's a big marker of success that drives them. A good amount of the academics in higher institutions in China dislike it. I've yet to meet a Chinese youth or adult who enjoys it or thinks they're effective.

The problem is both cultural and sustained by an education system that exploits the culture to induce this hyper competitiveness. It's a pretty shitty situation. Cheating is wrong, but it's a total raw deal.

Not him but it depends on how much they value fair play vs victory at any cost. If the only thing that matters is succeeding then cheating is viable. It doesn't necessarily mean the people can't have values but it does mean those values can be different.

Western society has spent all this time conflating high IQ to inherent righteousness that they have ignore the possibility that intellectual barbarism is totally a possibility. Where raw intellect without the moral decorations is utilized and sensitivity (not cultural but methodical and economic) is ignored. How useful is ethics if it can't provide inherent advantage? Ethics in the west had provided advantage because it allowed an "us vs them" mentality when it came to class, religion, politics and race. Specifically on how different societies conduct themselves and which were morally right. But what if a society who encompasses the most populus ethnic group in the word with arguably the largest economy in world has no need for proving their moral righteousness?

All this time spent on the conceptual idea of low IQ savages that no time was spent on high IQ savages. But of course everything I am saying is conjecture because I'm looking from the outside in and ignoring the intellectual barbarism we played when it came to gaming territory rights or parasitizing on less fortunate populations with toxic labor conditions.
