The difference between U and u is more of a problem from the professot. If he can't write at a consistent size, then I'm fucked. Personally, I use serifs on small letters while capital letters are written geometrically and as few strokes as possible. I'd use a circumflex for specific values like V̂ for specific volume and a dot for flow rate like V̇ for volumetric flowrate.
