Aristotle - this guy is still the best philosopher/psychologist in answering how the mind works.
Leibniz - overshadowed by Newton, but this guy anticipated general relativity, universal Turing machines and topology. All Einstein needed to do is read this unknown guy's work, be creative enough to connect these ideas into mathematical equations and get all the credit. Leibniz only get the appreciation he deserved in the 20th century.

In terms of eccentricity, Paul Erdős (the most prolific mathematician, thanks to meth and coffee) would be the more interesting one, and would be a better movie than the life of Nikola Tesla.
It is obvious that Tesla is a great inventor, but saying he is one of the top 20 greatest thinkers is an embarrassment to the whole field.

The revolution is about Analog (physical) vs. Digital (virtual)

Before Neumann's design, electrical engineers use analog computers to manipulate 1s and 0s (some computers use decimal). In order to manipulate these digits, engineers had to hard code physical (analog) machine-instructions on how to manipulate the data (like what Alan Turing did) using registers. What von Neumann realized is that you can "virtualize" everything including the machine-instructions by storing it in what he called random access memory. With this idea, you can create a "general purpose" computer and the concept of "programming" and "virtual" began to exist.

The difference between the the two is that von Neumann had the influence and connections to implement his better design. Of course, von Neumann had to use some help to implement it (he even tried to hire Turing). That's how academia works.
