Opinions on this textbook /sci/? Should I use it? If not, what are some better options?

Try Algebra by Lang, I think that would be a more appropriate comprehensive and reader-friendly text for a second course in Algebra.

Yeah I was thinking of using that one, but I wasn't sure if it was good for what I was doing. I'll check it out.

Pure math books about algebra like Lang begin way way different than college algebra.

Not really, schools do it to drag out the math sequence so kids don't finish in the 9th or 10th grade and ask for advanced subjects. Publishers use it to sell the same book to multiple classes. See the table of contents of James Stewart's "College Algebra", "Trigonometry", "Algebra and Trigonometry", and "Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus" book.

Oh I thought you were in college. If you're in high school then algebra 2 sounds about right if you're in your first year, I guess. But if that's the case you're probably violating 4chan's rules by being here.

In case you are in college and I just misread your post, Linear Algebra isn't part of either of those. It's mostly about vectors, space curves, and functions in R_n in general.

Discrete topics are not 5th grade. Lovász is unironically one of my favorite authors (one of his students taught me). I’m a mathematical analysisfag at heart, but combinatorics and discrete mathematics is legitimately such a fascinating subject.

As far as the difficulty of an intro to discrete math class? Hm, depends on your department. Here our most famous researchers are in discrete mathematics, so they go really ham.

I double majored in CS and math at a non meme school. Our discrete math, theoretical CS, systems design, and engineering are really strong, but your mileage may vary. >side effects of pure mathematics
Five years back, before starting to study mathematics, I had read few books on CS related stuff. I remember in particular reading with interest and excitement that fat piece on C++, 9 years ago. Now such a book just gives me the creeps. I don't think I would ever be able to pick up any CS(or engineering or 'science') stuff, they are so tedious that my brain begins to bleed on its own. Almost any book or article seems to be unnecessarily long and very lacking that there is no pleasure in reading them. It would be worse than cleaning the sewers, and now there is no turning back. I feel incapacitated to do those things, but fortunately math and arts are still there, keeping me warm.

I did talks and taught a class at a European school. The only big difference is that they do analysis, which I’m happy with. I don’t like how in the US, they set most students up for just basic software development, but in Europe, it seems to me the students are of a lower quality. The program isn’t half bad. I just get annoyed when half don’t come to lecture
