Not him but I need a work ethic. When I get home I do the exercises I need to do but nothing more even though I should, I just end up listening to music or whatever. I procrastinate all the time even though I’m interested in what I’m studying.
It’s stressful too because I know I’m wasting my time and constantly think about it.

>> No.10059924

>>10059920

that's because you see study as a chore and an imposition.

tell me, is there anything you've heard in one of your courses that you find interesting or that you feel that you're not grasping well enough and it's missing something?

>> No.10059930

>>10059924
Yeah, I find a lot of things interesting in what I’m studying, but it’s easier to laze around than to make an effort, I suppose. How do I stop viewing studying as a chore rather than as a means to become more skilled? I consciously acknowledge that I’m doing it but it doesn’t help

>> No.10059947

>>10059930

start with one thing you're interested in, see where curiosity brings you, ask yourself "why".
don't force yourself, curiosity is often crushed by highschool and college education, take it in incremental little steps.

also don't obsess over one thing only, allow some variety, read unrelated stuff, but avoid (if possible) videogames and things which are too "spoonfed".

pick a book, any genre, and read it, doesn't matter how much it will take, commit to reading.

the trick is to understand that making an effort shouldn't be a drag, but a pleasant sensation like going for a jog, hitting the gym, stuff like that.

I found myself in the same situation, started to wonder why I wasn't happy, ended up reading about neurology and now I have a gf I met in the biology dept because I was reading about neurotransmitters (I'm a physicfag)

Thanks for your response.

I think my main problems are procrastination and thinking the stuff's too complicated for me.

Also, I don't know how to make a schedule/plan for learning and actually sticking to it.

I lack the discipline and don't know how to get disciplined without 'suffering', I don't know how to study effectively besides having to work and not losing my 'life' with it

>> No.10059954

>>10059947
I do that, I read about some subjects I find neat but I often don’t have the required background to fully understand them which is where practice, exercises and learning the material comes into play.
>making an effort shouldn't be a drag
True. I actually enjoy the payoff, or working on something and gradually understanding it, it’s such a great feeling when you finally figure shit out and it “clicks”, but starting the process and not getting distracted, yet not forcing yourself, is the hard part.

>> No.10059957

>>10059949

well, I see 3 things on which you might want to reflect on

-procrastination: what are you rebelling against? what are you afraid to do? why are you setting your day in a way that you will allow yourself to fail? (don't have to answer me, just think about it)

-stuff is too complicated: probably there's some basic concept you've skipped or not paid enough attention to, go back and be thorough, ask yourself "why does this happen" and you'll see where the issues come from.

-making schedules/plans: well make a schedule you can follow, write the actual schedule down, see where you're failing, cut everything non essential, see if you can do it, add things very gradually, you must give yourself time to see if it works (tipically at least 3-4 weeks).

also go to bed always at the same time, wake up at the same time, you need at least 7 hours of sleep, it's important since it stabilizes a series of physiological processes.
eat 3 meals a day, possibly at the same times, preferrably not shitty food, avoid carbonated and caffeine as much as you can, try to get at least 30 minutes of light physical activity per day.

it's a lot of stuff but you can do it, take care of your body anon, stress can fuck you up.

>> No.10059961

>>10059954

well, I bet you're quite young and you still haven't quite gotten used to understand where an healthy effort ends and forcing yourself begins.
that's something to ponder.

see, you mention you lack background to understand stuff, there you go, start from there, realize that going back might feel fustrating because you think you're losing time, you should have already known that stuff, etc.
true, but better late than never, don't you think?

you can fix stuff, and by fixing stuff little by little, you will make huge steps ahead.

you have performance anxiety, not test anxiety, probably this manifests in other aspects of your life too.
probably this links to low self esteem (which is not intrinsecally a problem).
also you can't remove anxiety completely, a bit of it is normal and positive to have.
if it starts interfering with your life, see a psychologist.

To you I say solve this problem as soon as u can and shoot for that 3.5 or higher. If it helps try to make it into a game where you compete against what you see as your best self. Or if it’s easier the smartest person in your discipline.

The point isn't about getting a "skilled job", it's about realising what you find to be most interesting, and furthermore what you find most suitable to your self-concern. There are many that find learning highly enjoyable; I realised that I am one of them, and everything is so easy now. A good academic institution provides unique opportunities to refine your knowledge and push yourself beyond what you could do on your own; it compels you to create, and from that I found I love to create. My work and my passion were acknowledged, and I am well taken care of while I continue to do what I love. And if I find I want something different, then I'll have the knowledge and qualifications I need to follow through with that desire.

Why should I care about "rich corporate WASPs" or their miserable lives, except for what they offer me that I might find suitable and convenient? If I agree to employment, then I will leave the arrangement if I find it doesn't suit me. I live for myself and that which I find interesting, and there is always opportunity to pursue what I find interesting.

Then rewire your brain to forget what failure is. I started setting arbitrary goals for myself in order to avoid exactly this. It's easy to fade into mediocrity if you're at a level that sort of understands everything to the point where you'd never imagine failing, then you can't exceed because it's too comfortable getting Bs in everything. I avoided that by defining failure as anything less than 95% in a math class, and 93% for other subjects. For an easy math class like linear algebra or diff eq, only 100% is acceptable, a single missed question is failure. Once you ingrain this into your mind, the fear of failure never goes away.

When you get 100% on the two midterms, that's insane pressure for the final exam. It's fantastic, nothing quite like that rush. I actually missed a question on my diff eq final but my excuse is that it was at 7:30 am and I was tired. Unfortunately it'd be a waste of time to retake it, I just tutor instead so I get to never stop solving those elementsry problems, they're so fun. I still have my laplace table memorized. But then again, I'm socially retarded (narcissistic personality disorder) so maybe my brain works differently. I've literally conditioned myself to get off on math.

Found the overachiever. I've gotten mainly Cs in college and I still can't study worth shit.

Not to sound like a motivational poster but if you focus on living in the moment, aka don't dwell as much on the past and future, experience clearly what your senses are giving you then you'll find that life has much more happiness than suffering

I've never got a C, ever. "Average" people are really fucking stupid. C is the same as an F.

you don't learn it, you just do it
it will fucking suck, but sit your faggot ass down and do assignments right as you get home from class
no you niggerdick sucking cockmongler, not after you watch an episode of your anime or smoke a bowl, Immediately
to optimize this, make it easier to retain information, and make it not hell on earth, take a five minute break every 30 minutes, and a 30 minute break every 2 hours

im always thinking about what you want to become
for example: if you want to be an engineer you have to know every single thing about your field. how do you want to fullfill this role if you arent learning right now

Never too late, you just have to go for round two
debt a shit, I hope you networked good to get in to a job despite shit grades, or you're gonna need to eat more debt to redo your shit grades

Honestly, grades aren't bad (gonna graduate with a 3.2-3.3 depending on how this semester goes) and when I graduate I'll have some nice projects with a lot to talk about underneath.

I think my advice though is to get your personal life in check and then go to college. My biggest mistake was trying to grow as a person while also trying to be a successful student, but I found it just got really hard and burned me out of a social life, health, and super great networking. So my work habits are only just now getting good, and I'm finally starting to tackle issues that plagued me for a while that I ignored to work and go to school. Oh well, lessons for the next generation I guess.

I fought a war as a Marine Infantryman before going to college. Getting up at 8 to go to classes felt like sleeping in. Homework and studying felt like having more free time than I knew what to do with.

I kinda wanted to violently and graphically skullfuck to death every color-haired arts and humanities freshman spouting off about how they know everything better than anybody now because they took a psych 101 course, but I think thats probably normal.

It would only be abnormal if you didn't give in at least once. I remember when I did. The sound of wet flesh smacking against pavement, the feeling of his skull crumbling in my hands... Good memories.

My uni's dept for handling it was pretty great, too. They just cleaned it all up and told me to sleep it off. Happens to the best of us, and the guy's better off dead than as a pink-haired gender studies grad.

Yeah, honestly its not even exclusive to the politics for me. Just having some 18 year old pompously lecture me on how a world they haven't even been to yet works in "entry to" level buzzwords is what does it.

>We fuckin get it, you passed Phil101, soc101 and psych101 with a C average. You're not special. You're still an idiot. Go bother somebody else.

Once I asked one his major and he said "cultural studies." And I responded "ah, the good ol' highschool to starbucks cashier pipeline." He didnt like that much. Never talked to me again, which suits me just fine.

>Because at no point during the last 17 year long military conflict has even one of the 1.5 million servicemen deployed come home and gone to college.

most of the classes are bullshit, your brain knows this, and tries to force you into seeking something more productive

it's a natural healthy reaction, and there's nothing you can do about it, except of maybe lobotomizing yourself

People who enlist in the military are too stupid to go to college.
