hey mathfags, physicsfag here

can somebody give me a retard level explanation about the Langlands program or whatever you call that shit? everything i can read is too jargony for me to figure out

also, didn't Grothendieck write some long book thingy on what he proposed for the future of math? why are Langlands' ideas more popular?

There isn't a retard level explanation.

fine, give me whatever explanation you have and if there is any jargon i don't know, i'll ask you to tell me WTF you're talking about

Be warned: most people on this board will not be able to answer this question well (I certainly can't), you would probably need to be at least a few years into grad school and working on something related to be able to give a decent explanation. Everything else will be the pop-math equivalent of "dude like cats can be dead and alive at the same time and u never kno until u open da box!!11!" written by some undergrad who skimmed the wikipedia article.

Frenkel tries his best to keep it as basic as possible.

awesome, thanks for the link

except it looks like even to watch these lectures will take me a half day at least..... (pic related)

the string theory poster hanging in the hallway near my office mentions "Langlands duality" or some shit. is that more specific? i just want some intuitive idea of what people are so excited about in terms a physics grad student could comprehend

You know you don't have to download them to watch them, right? Here, this should be easier

As for why physicists are interested, basically Witten proved that there is a deep relationship between dualities in qft and the langlands program, specifically the geometric variant. There's indications by people like Frenkel that this is also deeply related to gauge theory even when it comes to the original formulation.
