this isn't a thread about who's the best physicist

this is a thread about: why do so many physicists think that 't Hooft is a real "physicist's physicist"?

he's not very popular in the mainstream, not at all, but when you mention his name around physics dorks we all go like "ah, yes, 't Hooft, yes, sure, i trust him" almost more than any other contemporary physicist. there are flaws to be pointed out in nearly any other of the big/famous physicists, but apparently Gerard is just the golden boy

why is this? i guess i don't appreciate whatever major accomplishments he's made that stand above and beyond guys like "muh superstrings" gayvid gross or "kek anthropic reasoning" steven weinberg or "it's a hologram, buy my book" lenny "homeless old guy" susskind.

or is it just that 't Hooft's a great lecturer or wrote a really good textbook or something? i've not seen any lectures of his nor seen any standard textbooks by him

please explain

He proved nonabelian gauge theory is renormalisable by introducing dimensional regularisation. This is the only regularisation scheme modern QFT books use (outside of historical trivia): the standard model and all of its component parts AND extensions use this vital machinery; he paved the way for all modern particle physics with this work.
Also: monopoles, instantons, large N limit, holography, confinement

so in other words he did a lot of real good physics, but didn't buy into the string theory or susy memes, and never got too speculative or turned pop/sci/?

I wouldn't say that, a lot of his work is close to string theory, especially his work on quantum gravity, particularly holography.

It's also not like 't Hooft isn't criticized, his work on the foundations of qm aren't really widely known and those who do don't hold it in high regard. He's done first rate work, as has Gross, Weinberg, and Susskind, whether you like them or not.

Is there enough demand for a PP general?

He did; he wrote lots of stuff about ST and SUSY.
He just later decided to become an anti-quantum crank.
