Explosivefag here, I haven't worked with fulminates but HMTD is of similar power and I have used it a bit.

A large crystal of that size would be much more unstable than normal, I wouldn't go throwing it.

The size of the blast is a load of shit, from that you might crack some windows, stun everyone and your hearing would be fucked. Not the huge blast they showed.

It's not possible. Fulminated mercury is too unstable. He would have exploded before he walked into the building. And if he mixed it with something to stabilize it, it would have needed more than air resistance to explode. And it did explode in mid-air.

It's just a TV show. The try to be as accurate as possible but dramatization will always be considered before realism.

Mathematics has many different areas. I'm CS/graphics so I do a lot of linear alg. and algo, which is probably closer to "strict Mathematics," and crypto. However, my friends in Physics do more complicated math involving diff-eq (however you spell the pronunciation), flux, boundary equations, etc.

I don't think physicists often invent new math. Newton was a physicist, to be sure, but he was also a researcher of mathematics. Not only that, but many times physicists explain new data and formulate theories by using math that had been considered "pure math" for decades or longer. Look at matrices and group theory; it was known and practiced by mathematicians long before it was discovered that it worked well in quantum mechanics.

To clear up. Most engineers are grunt engineers. I work at a RF circuit design company. 80 percent of the engineers are testers. Yet, a lot are designers, and some research the technology.


Also, just because you hold an engineering degree doesn't mean you're not going to do research. EE professors usually gain EE degrees, and for a lot of schools do substantial research.
