Guys I need help
I'm trying to submit my idea to mythbusters about Breaking Bad.
Basically I want them to do an experiment to prove whether it'd be possible to recreate that scene where Walter uses fulminated Mercury to make the room explode.
if you haven't seen look at the link below
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1wtYhu0-bQ
Also I posted the suggestion on their message board here
http://community.discovery.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6761919888/m/34219452501
Help me bump the thread up on that forum so it'll get more attention

This is stupid beyond belief.

Mercury fulminate doesn't release that much energy, the only way that would be possible is to have several highly flammable objects nearby.

Explosivefag here, I haven't worked with fulminates but HMTD is of similar power and I have used it a bit.

A large crystal of that size would be much more unstable than normal, I wouldn't go throwing it.

The size of the blast is a load of shit, from that you might crack some windows, stun everyone and your hearing would be fucked. Not the huge blast they showed.

Also, there is no concept of proff in physics.
Nothing is ever really "proven", in the strict mathematical sense. While "proff" it is the driving force in mathematics.

You should read up on the philosohpy of science and math, so you don't sound like your talking out your ass next time. It's ok I guess, I wouldnt expect an engineer to really know shit about anything anyway.

Reread the post you claim to be criticizing. The post said that (a) engineers use math like (b) physicists use math. You're confusing (a) and (b) with (c) how mathematicians use math.

It's more or less the same. Its all engineering in the end.

Mathematics has many different areas. I'm CS/graphics so I do a lot of linear alg. and algo, which is probably closer to "strict Mathematics," and crypto. However, my friends in Physics do more complicated math involving diff-eq (however you spell the pronunciation), flux, boundary equations, etc.

I would say that Physics is broad enough to include Math and Engineering as subsets of itself. MHO, anyway.

wtf is c) ?

Statement still stands, the math an physicst uses is different (some of it) then the math a mathematican uses.

Physicist constantly have to "invent new math", never heard of Newton, Heisenberg ? So, it is incorrect to say that they are just applying the math a mathematican uses. While engineers never come up with anything fundementally new, they just apply shit.

>> No.1003658

>>1003626

I don't think physicists often invent new math. Newton was a physicist, to be sure, but he was also a researcher of mathematics. Not only that, but many times physicists explain new data and formulate theories by using math that had been considered "pure math" for decades or longer. Look at matrices and group theory; it was known and practiced by mathematicians long before it was discovered that it worked well in quantum mechanics.

>> No.1003670

>>1003622
No, Not really, there is some math that is just really "pure" as they say. That still has no applications to physics.

There is still some really advanced math that only mathematicans do. And there is some advanced math that only physicist and mathematicans use. Then there is all the dumbed down shit engineers use. All the math you mentioned is very simple math that any engineer could learn. Its usually a first semester physics course.

To clear up. Most engineers are grunt engineers. I work at a RF circuit design company. 80 percent of the engineers are testers. Yet, a lot are designers, and some research the technology.

Also, just because you hold an engineering degree doesn't mean you're not going to do research. EE professors usually gain EE degrees, and for a lot of schools do substantial research.

tl:dr, you stop being an arrogant douche, and you stop being butt hurt about what most of the people in your field do.

Lol, most good physicist are mathematicans too. So I guess its a slippery slope. But regardless of there title they often do invent new math.

"Math as a tool," I understand, but even the most theoretical math can still be applied. The closest I can compare with my limited knowledge is trying to solve P-NP Complete. The proof itself will be a revolution, but it can't be immediately applied to all problems.

Can you give an example of math that is so theoretical that it has absolutely no application, whatsoever?

The study of transcendental numbers. While certain transcendental numbers, like pi or e, are very useful, the fact that they are transcendental has no practical application outside of pure mathematical inquiry.

You didn't get my point did you? A majority of the engineers take the job for the money, these are the grunts. The ones that do a shit ton of schooling and are successful do research or design, neither of which is grunt work.

You're probably some douchey kid in a low rank university getting a physics degree. Enjoy your testing.
