Both are incredible fields. Physics lets us understand the mysteries of the universe, and mathematics gives us the tools to do that.

If, however, you are comparing them in terms of jobs or money, then I don't know (or care). It is even sad for me that this is the first thing that comes to people's mind when considering this topic.

anyone can memorize theories and proofs. If you're talking about people who are publishing new and relevant proofs, then it's not top 5%, it's top .01%, and another argument altogether (one that's pretty pointless because there's a huge amount of overlap at that point). Physics has all the same intricacies of math, but you need to make real world judgments about which approximations are applicable, which methodology is fastest, and at the end of the day, making a model that describes the data is both more impressive and more useful than just making a model.
