This is by design though. The cartoonist/artist is modeling them after an animal in many cases, giving them large eyes, a pleasant expression, and animates them doing silly things with a voice actor who speaks in a charming way.

You feel trust to this character (or at least a child will) because they are being encouraged to develop a fondness for this character. "Wow, he's so funny and cool I wish he was my friend" is the reaction these very talented artists and producers are trying to create in children

I argue that Alice growing and shrinking is absolutely a sexual thing. There is no way that imagery could have such a profound effect (and the same, sexual effect at that) on so many readers/watchers of the movie without there being something inherently sexual about growth like that. Whether Lewis Carrol or Walt Disney were aware of that, I don't know.
