It pays well but it's worth every penny because it's actually boring as fuck to study. You'll end up memorizing how many nails you need to attach a joist hanger, what are the properties of different types of wood... yeah, learning load tracing and "big picture" stuff can be really rewarding but the minutae will be what kills you. All those small boring details that nobody gives a fuck about. And those boring details is probably what you'll be doing. You won't be designing skyscrapers out of college. In fact, you likely never will. Your job will be designing beams and site repair details... FOREVER.
