Does anybody have any information on the mathematics behind a wave upon a wave? I'm trying to observe a point where a wave distorts itself to the point it interacts with itself.

Notably, I'd like to see a wave ripple across a circle with increasing distortion until the wave reaches an intensity that renders it in two creating a division possibly.

I suspect it looks something like cell division.
