Colon of a nursery pig in which the mucosa has a yellowish granular appearance, with some smooth erosion foci. At a microscopic level they are areas with mucosal necrosis. It is a necrotic colitis caused by Salmonella. In this process, the small intestine can also be affected. We must make a differential diagnosis with the lesions caused by Brachyspiras, specially B. hyodysenteriae, that only affect the large intestine and that are more frequent in growing and fattening pigs, although they can also affect nursery pigs.
