Look this book up, you'll find that it's legit. How it works is this: we get "immersed" in our thoughts in the same way that we become immersed in a movie or book. The problem is that we can respond to our thoughts as if they are reality, when they could be distortions. Mindfulness meditation is cultivating de-immersion from thought, which allows you to perceive (not merely think) thoughts are merely being mental phenomenon. This helps to break the loops of negative ruminating thoughts characteristic of depression and anxiety.

TL;DR Mindfulness meditation can help you control your reactions to your thoughts.

Depression features ruminating, repeating thoughts such as "I'm hopeless" that one responds to as if they were reality. Mindfulness meditation teaches de-immersion, to be able to experience your thoughts as just mental phenomenon instead of a reality one is immersed in. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy has been shown to be just as effective as medicine for depression and anxiety, and has become very popular in the mental health field for this reason.

If you have depression, The Mindful Way Workbook can be a great help. In addition you may be able to find MBCT groups in your area.
