There is no reason why you would ever want to light a room with a laser. The entire point of a laser is to have an ultra-low diffusion beam of light, focused on one place. Lightbulbs do their job better then anything we know of. And yes, lasers have gone from being a scientific tool to being used in our daily lives since their invention in the fifties. A better example would be the triumph of the electric lightbulb over the oil lamp, or the fluorescent bulb over the incandescent.
