I first saw this in Jane's USAF and it got me hooked ever since.

Does anyone know why the nozzle resizes like that? Is it consciously done (i.e automatically by the computers) or is the nozzle just responding to thrust variation? I'm thinking its for accommodating varying flow rates, but could someone walk me through the entire webm?

For some reason I've been fascinated by 'fans' as a kid, which evolved to just jet engines/turbines as I grew up. Seeing that black and white spiral in the center swirl as the blades spin and the blades themselves have always fascinated me.
