Can someone explain to me why its said that exoskeletons would never work on large animals because something would collapse under its own weight?

I mean obviously yes, the skeleton is heavy. But if the legs are blown up proportionally, wouldn't the insects strength go up proportionally as well allowing it to carry the skeleton?
