Tesla has a battery breakthrough in the wings to power the Roadster 2020 model and Semi. It's not known the exact technological breakthrough but a huge number of signs point to this including unspecified plans for new battery cells.

Maxwell had been talking about a potential “strategic partnership” in the works for a few months regarding its dry electrode technology.

(The S and X models of Tesla have not updated to the new battery 2170 and this may be why.)
