Hey OP, go for it. Learn what you need/want to know. A couple things - university websites to check the courses and see what the required books are. Also associations like Society for Manufacturing Engineers (sme dot org).

Then (as you probably know) put together your business model, hire some engineers for fine tuning (engineers of the non-butthurt varity. they do exist. No, really, they do...) and make a fortune.
