I'm looking for a study in which they harmed mice (might be electroshocks), and also placed switches in the cages so the mice could turn off the shocks. And then later they would turn off the ability of the switch to control the shocks, but the mice were still pushing it.

Are there any ways to stay committed to something? I get all excited about doing different stuff but I never seem to do it for very long. I lose steam after a while and then start thinking about other things. Pretty much everything interests me. I feel like this is ruining my ability to self study. I do well in school but that's because there is pressure to stay committed. Is it ADHD or something?

What kill most animals and humans when they undergo severe trauma, is not the damage itself, but the shock, our minds simply shutdown to avoid further pain.

If you were to sedate yourself to the point where shock wouldnt be an issue, how would you be able to preform such a surgery at a level that you wont kill yourself.

But the most obvious reasons of all.

Why the fuck would you believe, that you would have the mental fortitude and strength to sustain such levels of pain, when you cant even put down the fork and diet.

>You must be a pretty devoted materialist to argue that math is idealist while restricting what counts as real to the material world.
Abstraction isn't idealism you brainlet.
Abstraction is the process of behaving around fictional reference points as though they were real.
e.g. We pass around pieces of green paper and pretend there's something underlying this called the 'US Dollar' which has no physical form, can be represented in any number of alternative media (dollar bills, electronic records, checks, money orders, etc).
The physical behavior is what's real. The fictional story is what we pay more attention to though in a way that's somewhat weird / paradoxical seeming at times e.g. with the money example the not literally existing concept of currency has more sway over our behavior than visceral biological problems right in our faces, like when someone loses their access to shelter from the elements or their ability to receive food because they no longer have enough money.
None of this requires that you believe in philosophical idealism where these abstractions exist in a literal sense floating around some Platonic realm.

HFA here was wondering if there are anymore of you on here? If so scientifically speaking what are your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to how your brain works? Like I am decent at seeking out patterns and thinking abstractly but everything else I am shit at. Oh and I have a decent memory for strictly numbers, letters, and shapes.

Why are autists so bothered by the concept of "infinite?" This seems to come up a lot. I don't understand why they want so badly to get rid of it, even to the point of making insane suggestions like there should be a largest natural number because the universe will end eventually, as though numbers are somehow meant to be defined in terms of how many symbols biological organisms can write down before dying.
Using infinity as a concept works. We get plenty of mileage out of it. Insofar as it doesn't work you can explore ways to more rigorously pin down how you want to engage with it. There's no need to go nuclear on infinity and try to banish it altogether.

>no reasonable person would ever assume what you are assuming and what Fermi assumed
If you want to be taken seriously stop trying to claim Fermi was retarded. He absolutely could have made a specific assumption you have good evidence to dispute but holy shit, you come across as a mentally challenged 12 year old when you do that. Fermi was easily one of the greatest intellects in human history. Read a book.

What are the chances I have permanent brain damage from sleep deprivation?

Throughout my adolescence I averaged about 5 hours of sleep plus or minus (usually minus) 1 or 2 hours. When I was 15 and 16 I smoked a shit ton of weed and dropped acid a handful of time before I stopped doing drugs altogether after an epiphany I had while tripping on shrooms. I'm 18 now and I'm still above average (1500 SAT for instance), but I have the lurking feeling my processing speed has gotten far slower compared to when I was 13 or 14.

Theres no way to know for sure whether I've retarded myself, but what's the data on the effects of sleep deprivation on brain development or processing speed (i.e. myelination)? Is the brain plastic enough at this point in my life to recover from the damage (if there is any)?
