game time /sci/

Sum A;1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15
Sum B;2,3,6,7,10,11,14,15
Sum C;5,6,7,11,12,13,14,15
Sum D;8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15

think of a number, tell me on what sums you find it and I will guess it. The thing is to understand the idea behind of it and how I do it.

Can someone please explain how to find the CI when σ isn't given?

Construct a 95% CI for the mean for the following set of data:
2.2, 1.8, 3.1, 2.0, 2.4, 2.0, 2.1, 1.2.

Since σ isn't given I know I have to use E(S^2), except he never really explained what it was. Google isn't being very helpful...

Is personal experience more important than contributing as much as possible to humankind as a whole? In other words, is spending time with your mother more important than contributing to science or literature?

Hard mode: no "the truth is always in the middle" cop-outs

also yes i made this thread on /lit/ the other day that board is dead

Hello /sci/, here is a thought (some may call it a brain fart).
An Entreprise doesn't employ people. An entreprise rents people's time and energy to reach the objectives an entreprise has.

That's not how things are perceived and taught in the real world. Yet, it is truth.

Is it science related?
I think it is.

Opinions?

Humankind is ultimately insignificant. We keep ourselves busy day and night avoiding the thought. You could argue that a great deal of space is just emptiness but I think what makes most of us feel insignificant is our size in relation to our universe. We feel alone because we are alone: not in the sense that we haven't any human companions but in the sense that in the vast reaches of our universe, we are the only observable transient beings. So if we are to live alone and die alone, what purpose does life serve if not to remind us that our planet came to support this life through random probability on the greatest scale. That we are ultimately alone: as soon as our entire planet is consumed, what's left to remind the universe that we once lived?

Now picture a universe in which humans exist almost everywhere and are spread about the galaxies, communicating across nebulae with new technologies. But I don't think it would be much different from our current state. I think the feeling of being insignificant arises from the knowledge that our race and its accomplishments will all be gone someday.

So what makes humans feel the need to leave our cosmic footprints behind? You can see it early on in human history in the form of statues, buildings, and monuments in reverence of a certain figure.
Why, though?
See I think it's a bit of a contradiction. Those of us who feel the need to leave something behind are worried about humanity as a whole: worried about humanity on a greater time line than those who just want to live in the moment and forget the big picture.
And when most of us tackle this issue, we become depressed and unable to handle it.
Are we unable to handle it? This would therefore make humans inferior as they exist now. We cannot answer the questions that this level of
introspection brings forth.
Or, are we depressed because this knowledge leads us to a dead end and we cannot answer the question?

Should I dedicate my life to having fun (partying, getting drunk, getting laid, etc.)

or discovering new things (solving problems, innovating, creating new technologies, doing science in general, potentially having an impact on the future of human society)?

After all, I only have one life. I should make the best out of it.

Ennui. Humans are ultimately insignificant. Everything we do is to keep our minds busy from thinking about this. However, science is something that delves directly into the depths of our insignificance. What determines a species' significance? Can there be a species that is actually significant? Or is existence in itself insignificant?

Post good logic/math puzzles. Here's one I got from Khan Academy:

You, Bob, and Joe are all perfect logicians. Each of you has a number written on your forehead. This number is an integer, greater than zero. One of these three numbers is the sum of the other two. All three of you know this information.

None of you know your own number, though you can look around and see each other's. You see that Bob has the number 20 written on his forehead. Joe has 30 written on his forehead.

Someone asks you, "what is the number on your forehead?" You respond that you do not know. Then someone asks Bob, "what is the number on your forehead?" Bob responds that he does not know. Then someone asks Joe, "what is the number on your forehead?" Joe responds that he does not know.

You now have enough information to deduce your own number. What is it?

Figure this out and/or post your own puzzles.
